Christian Behavior
1 Remind them to be under the control of magistrates and authorities, to be obedient, to be open to every good enterprise.
2They are to slander no one, to be peaceable, considerate, exercising all graciousness toward everyone.
3For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, deluded, slaves to various desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful ourselves and hating one another.
4But when the kindness and generous love
of God our savior appeared,
5not because of any righteous deeds we had done
but because of his mercy,
he saved us through the bath of rebirth
and renewal by the holy Spirit,
6whom he richly poured out on us
through Jesus Christ our savior,
7so that we might be justified by his grace
and become heirs in hope of eternal life.
8This saying is trustworthy.
Advice to Titus. I want you to insist on these points, that those who have believed in God be careful to devote themselves to good works; these are excellent and beneficial to others.
9 Avoid foolish arguments, genealogies, rivalries, and quarrels about the law, for they are useless and futile.
10After a first and second warning, break off contact with a heretic,
11realizing that such a person is perverted and sinful and stands self-condemned.

God’s House and People
1 Rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, insincerity, envy, and all slander;
3 for you have tasted that the Lord is good.
4Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God,
5and, like living stones, let yourselves be built* into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6For it says in scripture:
“Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion,
a cornerstone, chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame.”
7Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith:
“The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”
8and
“A stone that will make people stumble,
and a rock that will make them fall.”
9 But you are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
10Once you were “no people”
but now you are God’s people;
you “had not received mercy”
but now you have received mercy.

Causes of Division
1Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions* that make war within your members?
2You covet but do not possess. You kill and envy but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war. You do not possess because you do not ask.
3You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
4Adulterers! Do you not know that to be a lover of the world means enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wants to be a lover of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
5Or do you suppose that the scripture speaks without meaning when it says, “The spirit that he has made to dwell in us tends toward jealousy”?
“God resists the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.”
7So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you of two minds.
9Begin to lament, to mourn, to weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection.
11Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. Whoever speaks evil of a brother or judges his brother speaks evil of the law and judges the law. If you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
12There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save or to destroy. Who then are you to judge your neighbor?g

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
5who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time.
6 In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials,
7so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
