Pope Francis at Mass: the lesson of Elijah

Pope Francis at Mass: the lesson of Elijah

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis celebrated Mass in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta on Friday morning. In remarks to the faithful following the Readings of the Day, the Holy Father focused on three attitudes that are characteristic of the Christian: “standing” before God in “silence” to hear His voice and readiness to “go out” into the world to proclaim what one has heard to others. The Pope also warned against the danger of paralyzing fear in Christian life, no matter where one is in one’s journey with God and regardless of one’s state of life in the Church:
Standing upright and walking
To explore this issue, and how to escape the tunnel of fear, the Pope focused on the the prophet Elijah, from whose book the First Reading of the Day was taken. The Holy Father recalled how Elijah was victorious, how he “fought so much for the faith,” and defeated hundreds of idolaters on Mount Carmel. Then, he reaches a breaking point: one of the many acts of persecution aimed at him finally hit its mark, and he collapses in discouragement under a tree, waiting to die – except that God does not leave him in that state of prostration, but sends an angel with an imperative: get up, eat, go out:

Homily for Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: full text

(Vatican Radio) On Friday 3 June, Pope Francis celebrated Holy Mass with priests in St Peter's Square as part of a special Jubilee of Mercy for Priests.
Please find below the prepared text for the Holy Father's Homily:
This celebration of the Jubilee for Priests on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus invites us all to turn to the heart, the deepest root and foundation of every person, the focus of our affective life and, in a word, his or her very core. Today we contemplate two hearts: the Heart of the Good Shepherdand our own heart as priests.
The Heart of the Good Shepherd is not only the Heart that shows us mercy, but is itself mercy. There the Father’s love shines forth; there I know I am welcomed and understood as I am; there, with all my sins and limitations, I know the certainty that I am chosen and loved. Contemplating that heart, I renew my first love: the memory of that time when the Lord touched my soul and called me to follow him, the memory of the joy of having cast the nets of our life upon the sea of his word (cf. Lk 5:5).

‘Case closed’ after Vatican reiterates Lipa Marian apparition inauthentic

MANILA, June 3, 2016— The Vatican has spoken with regards to the alleged Marian “apparitions” in Batangas and says no.
“The case is closed,” said Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
Asked for his reaction after the Vatican’s doctrinal watchdog reached the conclusion that there was no miracle in the 1948 apparition, the archbishop responded: “We all obey. We always obey the Holy See.”
“Her being the mother of Jesus is our first and constant reason for honoring her,” he said. “We do not need apparitions to honor the Blessed Virgin.”
