Baguio diocese decries ‘red-tagging’ of bishop

A northern Philippine diocese has decried the “red-tagging”, or labelling of its own bishop as communist or terrorist.

In a statement issued Nov. 25, the Diocese of Baguio clarified that Bishop Victor Bendico has no link with any “right-wing or left-leaning groups”.

“We ask those posting on Facebook to stop red-tagging our bishop,” said the diocese’s spokesperson Fr. Rosito Pedro, Jr.

Typhoon-hit Philippine diocese appeals for clean water

Acute shortage of clean and potable water raises health fears not only for residents but more so for those in shelters and evacuation centres, amid the pandemic.

A Philippine diocese has appealed for people in desperate need of clean and safe water following Typhoon Vamco. Ilagan Diocese in Cagayan province, north of Manila, is in need of clean water after floods submerged vast areas following the release of water from a nearby dam, UCA News reported.

Archbishop urges gov’t leaders to ‘set aside politics’ to help disaster victims

A Catholic bishop in the southern Philippines called on the country’s political leaders to “set aside politics” and help those most affected by the recent calamities.

“Let us set aside politics, our political affiliation, and convictions,” said Archbishop Martin Jumoad of Ozamiz in an interview over Church-run radio Veritas 846.

“What is important is to unite and work together because we are all Filipinos and those who are suffering are our brothers and sisters,” added the prelate from Mindanao.

The Archbishop of Birmingham, Bernard Longley gives his reaction to the attack in Nice describing the killings as senseless and says there must be the determination to secure peace and good relations in all parts of the world.

Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham in the UK has joined the ranks of other religious and political leaders around the world in condemning the knife attack which killed three people on Thursday in the Basilica of Notre Dame in Nice, France.

In the aftermath of the killings, Pope Francis expressed his sorrow and offered prayers for the Church in France.. He also condemned "such violent acts of terror in the strongest possible way."
