Pope: Draw life from the saving encounter with the Lord

Pope Francis presided Friday over a penitential liturgy, opening the traditional "24 hours for the Lord" initiative of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, which takes place annually on the Friday and Saturday preceding the fourth Sunday of Lent.

“The two of them alone remained: mercy with misery” (In Joh 33, 5). In this way Saint Augustine sums up the end of the Gospel we have just heard. Those who came to cast stones at the woman or to accuse Jesus with regard to the Law have gone away, having lost interest. Jesus, however, remains. He remains because what is of value in his eyes has remained: that woman, that person. For him, the sinner comes before the sin. I, you, each one of us come first in the heart of God: before mistakes, rules, judgements and our failures. Let us ask for the grace of a gaze like that of Jesus, let us ask to have the Christian perspective on life. Let us look with love upon the sinner before his or her sin; upon the one going astray before his or her error; upon the person before his or her history.

Cardinal Tagle to seminarians: Be vigilant, beware of temptations

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila visited the U.S. over the weekend and warned Florida seminarians about temptations “that makes you messianic”.

Speaking at a Mass to mark the 60th anniversary of St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami on March 24, he urged the seminarians “not to bite into what the world offers”.

He said that because of the thought that they are called by God to serve, the temptation is always there “to pretend that we can pronounce everything”.

An amount has been sent on behalf of Pope Francis to the people hit by the devastation caused by cyclone Idai.

The Pope’s closeness and solidarity for the people of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, devastated by Cyclone Idai, has taken a concrete form.

The Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development announced on Friday that the Pontiff has decided to send an initial contribution of €150 thousand to the 3 countries to help in the first phase of the emergency.

VATICAN— The place Pope Francis chose to sign his letter to young people is an important and popular sanctuary housing the Holy House of Loreto.

According to tradition, the tiny stone house is considered to be the home where the Mary was born and raised and also the house in which the Holy Family was thought to live when Jesus was a boy. It also is held to be the place where Mary received the angel’s annunciation and conceived the Son of God through the Holy Spirit.

At least 40 people have died in separate attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. In the wake of the attacks, the nation’s Catholic Bishops have expressed their solidarity with the Muslim community.

Reporting from New Zealand, Nicky Webber says, "Our entire country is absolutely devastated by the 49 confirmed deaths in New Zealand’s first terrorist attack". She described "the massacre of innocent people, at prayer, in their place of worship" as "shocking and heartbreaking".

Pope at Mass: Lent is an opportunity to be simple and true

Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the Casa Santa Marta on Friday highlighting the need for believers to be true Christians and shun appearances.

Taking his cue from the Book of the prophet Isaiah, Pope Francis condemned all forms of hypocrisy and explained the difference there is between objective and formal reality.

Formal reality, the Pope said, is an expression of objective reality, but the two must proceed together, or else we end up living an existence of “appearances”, a life “without truth”.
