Step up the battle against hunger and malnutrition

Vatican City, 16 October 2015 (VIS) – On the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the Holy Father sent a message to the director general Jose Graziano da Silva.

Noting that a great number of our brothers and sisters still suffer from hunger and malnutrition in spite of the great efforts made to combat these problems, he condemns the underlying causes: an uneven distribution of resources and the lack of agricultural development. “We live in an age in which the unfettered pursuit of profit, the concentration of particular interests and the effects of unjust policies render less effective the actions taken by States or impede effective cooperation within the international community”. He adds that much remains to be done in this area.

Bishop’s reminder: No Eucharist without Mary

TACLOBAN City, Oct. 15, 2015 – Mary’s role in the Eucharist can’t be denied.
This was the emphatic thought that Naval Biliran Bishop Filomeno Bactol shared in his homily yesterday afternoon on the feast day celebration of Our Lady of Fatima in Sto. Niño Church in this city.

“Had Mary not allowed her body to be used for Jesus (to be born) there is no basis for (Christ) to say, ‘This is my body’,” Bactol stressed pertaining to the Holy Eucharist where the Holy Host is consecrated into the Body of Christ.

Mary leads to Jesus

According to him, this more vividly explains the link between the devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and Jesus, calling the prayers and devotion to Mary “Cristocentric.”

We are Christian Asians for a reason’ – PH laity

MANILA, Oct. 8, 2015 – Catechists believe Filipinos are Asians for a reason, and God has a plan in putting the Philippines in a continent where Christians are a minority.

“I really am convinced that there is a divine reason why we are in this part of the world. It is no accident. Rather, it is a mission. God wishes our country to serve as the hub of the faith in Asia,” Darwin Beceril, a volunteer catechist from the Diocese of Novaliches, told CBCP News in an interview.

Pope Francis: Respect and listen to your Guardian Angel

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis says God has given everybody a Guardian Angel to accompany us and offer advice and protection, an Angel to whom we should listen with meekness and respect. He was speaking during his homily at Mass on Friday (2nd October) celebrated in the Santa Marta Residence.

Listen to this report by Susy Hodges (including clips of the Pope's voice):
Taking his cue from Friday’s feast of the Guardian Angels, the Pope’s homily reflected on this divine presence in our lives, describing the Angel as God’s ambassador who accompanies each one of us. He noted how the proof of this was illustrated when God chased Adam out of Paradise: He didn’t leave Adam on his own or say to him: “fend for yourself as best as you can.”  The Pope stressed that every person has been given a Guardian Angel by God who stays by our side.

Groups to march for ecological conversion

QUEZON City, Oct. 3, 2015 – Climate advocates, ecological ministers, students, members of religious congregations, and of non-government organizations (NGOs) plan to hold a symbolic march on Oct. 4 to Quezon Memorial Circle as a way of sending across the message of ecological conversion.

“We want them [Filipinos] to be informed on the need for ecological conversion right now. We should do something, and we will start in our own homes. With that, we will make a difference,” said Br. Angelo Ace Cortez, OFM, in an interview.

He shared participants seek to live out the legacy of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day will coincide with the march.
