Take quake warnings seriously – prelate

QUEZON City, May 22, 2015—At the risk of sounding alarmist, a Catholic prelate has exhorted the faithful not to take government advisories about natural disasters, especially earthquakes, for granted since their only aim is to prepare everyone long before the worst strikes.

Not a joking matter

“When we receive some warning, some vital information, let us be serious about it,” Cubao Bishop Honesto F. Ongtioco told Church-run Radio Veritas in an interview.
“It’s just to advise people … When there are such warnings or advice, let us respond to it accordingly and seriously,” he added.
The prelate’s appeal came on the heels of a series of maps released recently by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) which details the places in Metro Manila and nearby provinces sitting directly on top of the active East (EVF) and West Valley Fault (WVF) Lines.

It indicates that some heavily populated areas in the National Capital Region (NCR), Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, and Bulacan are more likely than others to receive the full force of a 7.2-magnitude earthquake in the event it hits.

Pope Francis: Christians are called to be one being

(Vatican Radio)  His wounds are the "price" that Jesus paid for the Church to be united forever to Him and to God. Christians today are called to ask for the grace of unity and to fight against all "spirit of division, of war, of jealousy."  That was Pope Francis’s reflection during his Homily at Mass Thursday morning in the chapel of the Santa Marta guesthouse.
Listen to this report by Tracey McClure:
For Pope Francis, "the great prayer of Jesus" is that the Church is united - that Christians "be one" as Jesus is with his Father. Drawing his reflections from the day’s readings, Pope Francis immerses us in the atmosphere of the Last Supper - not long before Christ gives Himself over to the Passion.  Recalling Christ’s weighty words entrusted to the Apostles, the Pope warns us against "the great temptation" and entreats us not to yield to the other "father:" the one of "lies" and "division."

The price of unity

It is comforting, observes Francis, to hear Jesus say to the Father that He did not want to pray simply for his disciples but also for those who will believe in Him "through their word." That’s a familiar phrase, but one the Pope thinks is worth drawing special attention to:

"Maybe, we do not pay enough attention to these words: Jesus prayed for me! This is really a source of confidence: He prays for me;  He prayed for me ... I imagine …a figure …as Jesus is before the Father in Heaven. It is so: He prays for us; He prays for me. And what does the Father see? The wounds, the cost. The price He paid for us. Jesus prays for me with His wounds, with His wounded heart and He will continue to do so.”

MANILA, 15 May 2015— Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, the newly elected President of Caritas Internationalis, has called for a strengthened service to the poor and the marginalized.

Speaking on the phone at the confederation’s 20th general assembly in Rome to accept his new post, he said a united effort is needed in building a ‘church of the poor’.

“Let us together strengthen the church of the poor so our witness can help guide us to a world of understanding justice, true freedom and peace,” Tagle said to delegates from over 130 member organizations from all over the world.

“Thank you for your trust. I’m limited in my capacities but with all of you, with the love that Jesus has poured into our hearts and in the name of all of the poor people in the world, I accept this election,” he said

Pope: Fearful and joyless communities are not Christian

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday (May 15th) urged Catholic bishops of the Central African Republic (CAR) to promote inter-religious dialogue and peaceful co-existence and encourage their flock to respond to hatred and violence with forgiveness and love. The Pope’s appeal came in a speech that was handed to the bishops of the African nation during an audience with him in the Vatican. CAR is just emerging from two years of violent conflict between Muslim and Christian armed groups that killed thousands of people and displaced around a million others.

Listen to this report by Susy Hodges:

In his address to the CAR bishops who are in Rome on their ad-limina visit, Pope Francis referred to the recent sectarian violence in the African nation and the huge suffering this has caused to many of its population. He said he was particularly grateful for the assistance that many Catholic communities provided to victims of the violence and to those who were displaced. “Your task is difficult,” he told the bishops but stressed that when violence and hatred are unleashed, that’s when Christians "are called to respond with forgiveness and love." The Pope expressed regret that this was “not always the case” during the recent fighting and said this was a sign that “the Gospel has not yet penetrated sufficiently deeply into the hearts of the people everywhere” to prompt them to “change their reflexes and behaviour.”

Pope Francis supports peace education in schools

(Vatican Radio) The Director of the Vatican Press Office Father Federico Lombardi said Pope Francis is an enthusiastic supporter of peace education in schools.  Father Lombardi was speaking at a press conference in the Vatican on Tuesday held to speak about the “Factory of Peace” project that has been launched by leading educational, political and church figures to help schoolchildren realise the importance of peace and dialogue with others.  The press conference comes just days before a scheduled meeting between Pope Francis and seven thousand children  in the Vatican (on May 11th) to talk about the themes of peace, love, welcome and integration.

‘Ground’ corruption worsens poverty in PH – bishop

BORONGAN City, E. Samar, May 8, 2015—While it is old news that the culture of corruption causes nationwide poverty, a bishop asserts its practice on the ground level worsens the plight of Filipino families, and heightens the effects of natural calamities in the country.

Project monitoring

“Corruption on the ground level is still there. That is why the national government has to see to it that its services really reach the ordinary people on the ground,” said Borongan Bishop Crispin B. Varquez in a Radio Veritas report, expressing doubt whether projects and their implementation undergo monitoring.

The prelate also stated he agrees with the outcome of a poll released recently by the Social Weather Station (SWS).
