Priest to PNoy: Quit SONA, get ‘on the ground’

MANILA, July 25, 2014—Convinced it will be nothing but a grandstanding drama, a church leader challenged President Benigno S. Aquino III (PNoy) to forego the State of the Nation Address (SONA) and to consider getting “on the ground” to know what real life is like for ordinary Filipinos.

“I join those urging for the SONA boycott, because I am certain it will only be about the President having us believe that he had done us so many favors when what we actually experience ‘on the ground’ is far beyond his wildest dreams,” said Fr. Marlon Lacal, executive secretary of the Association of Major Religious Superior of the Philippines (AMRSP) in Filipino in a Radyo Veritas report.

Conference underlines Pope’s social justice teachings

(Vatican Radio) The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, in collaboration with the Secretariat of State, held a two-day conference, 12-13 July, at the Vatican on the concept of “inclusive economy”, which Pope Francis proposes in Evangelii Gaudium.
Some 70 scholars and representatives from business and international organizations participated in the closed-door sessions, aimed at deepening the thought and perspectives on social justice that Pope Francis puts forth in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium.

Msgr Mario Toso, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, offered the keynote address. In an interview with Vatican Radio, he said distorted interpretations of the Pope’s words and accusations of Marxism underlined the need to explain that the Pope’s proposal for an “economy that is always more inclusive” does not imply the abandonment of a market economy, and that his allusion to an “economy that kills” refers to the idolatry of money.

Online missionaries organize confab on ‘authentic encounters’

MANILA, July 9, 2014 — Taking on Pope Francis’ challenge to be digital Good Samaritans, YouthPinoy (YP), a group of young Filipino “online missionaries”, is organizing the Catholic Social Media Summit (CSMS) version 3.0 on September 13 – 14 which will focus on the need for authentic encounters.

“As we encounter people online, we also need to have real encounters with them offline. It means that what you do online should be the same as who you are offline,” YP president Sky Ortigas said in an interview.

Ortigas, who headed the first two CSMSs in 2012 and 2013, said nowadays, it is easy to equate personal connections with being online.

CBCP head seeks ‘Pope Francis’ approach vs corruption

MANILA, July 5, 2014–Opening a three-day meeting of the country’s bishops, the head of the Catholic hierarchy said the church’s pastoral approach against corruption must be like Pope Francis’ way.

Instead of just condemning corruption, CBCP President Archbishop Socrates Villegas said the local church could adopt the pope’s approach by widening circles of integrity.

“Perhaps, we can reconsider our approach at solving the cancer of the Philippine society which is graft and corruption by talking more about beauty of integrity and honesty rather constantly denouncing the evil that we experience,” Villegas said.

Meeting of the Council of Cardinals: "Free, frank, and friendly"

Vatican City, 4 July 2014 (VIS) – The Council of Cardinals, gathered at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, will conclude its meetings this evening. The next sessions have been scheduled for 15-17 September, 9-11 December and 9-11 February 2015.
With regard to the themes considered, as well as those indicated in recent days (the Governorate, the Secretariat of State and the Institute for the Works of Religion), the Council resumed its reflections on the dicasteries of the Curia. The Laity and Family were studied in particular depth, especially in terms of the contributions and roles that should be assumed by laypeople, married couples and women.
