In the meeting on climate change and modern slavery, the Pope warns against the idolatry of technocracy

Vatican City, 22 July 2015 (VIS) – Yesterday afternoon Pope Francis greeted the participants in the meeting “Modern slavery and climate change: the commitment of cities” and in the Symposium “Prosperity, people and planet: achieving sustainable development in our cities ”, held in the Vatican's Casina Pio IV by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, whose chancellor is Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo. The events were attended by the mayors of major cities, local administrators and various representatives of the United Nations.

The Holy Father gave an impromptu address in which he reiterated that care for the environment meant, above all, adopting an attitude of human ecology and that “Laudato si'” was not simply a “green” but also a social document. He also considered the theme of the unfettered growth of cities due to the lack of work for rural populations, and invited the mayors to collaborate with international bodies in order to face the issues of exploitation and human trafficking caused by migratory phenomena.

Holy See: Solution to global poverty cannot be left to market forces alone

(Vatican Radio) The Holy See has reminded the international community many countries are still facing enormous challenges in order to fully participate in the global economy.
Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, said some countries have “fallen further behind and may continue to do so” unless the international community help them find solutions for what is constraining them.
Archbishop Auza is the Head of Delegation of the Holy See to the Third International Conference on Financing for Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

“As Pope Francis said in his recent Encyclical Laudato Si’, development efforts cannot make significant progress if countries continue to emphasize their national interests to the detriment of the global common good,” said Archbishop Auza.

Missing priest’s protegé renews promise to mentor

BAYBAY, Leyte, July 18, 2015—A protegé of Fr. Rosaleo “Rudy” Romano, the Filipino Redemptorist priest who disappeared 30 years ago, has honored the memory of his mentor by renewing his promise to live out all that he had learned from him, especially the love for the common folk.

Remembering Romano: The Redemptorist community (C.Ss.R.), of which activist-priest Rosaleo "Rudy" Romano is a member, commemorates the 29th year of his "diasppearance" in a mini outdoor exhibit at the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (Baclaran Church) in Parañaque City, July 11, 2014. Heart and soul

“If he were still alive today, I would thank him for everything he had taught me. I promise Fr. Rudy that I will serve the Filipino people with all my heart and with all my soul,” shared Yoyoy Cala, a cultural activist from Leyte, who first met the legendary priest in 1983, but had heard of him long before.

For his pastoral style in dealing with his flock, Cala compared Romano to Pope Francis, to Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas, and to the latter’s predecessor retired Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz

“Fr. Romano wanted to follow in the footsteps of St. Joseph, the patron of workers,” he said.

Be like Romano, Romero

Meanwhile, in a statement, Cebú Archbishop José S. Palma has enjoined priests and religious to make the cries of the poor central to their prayers and not just seek band aid solutions to poverty, following the example of Romano and Blessed Oscar Romero of El Salvador, another champion of the poor.

“I call upon the whole archdiocese to remember these two modern martyrs. Above all, I pray that we would be as brave as Jesus, Blessed Oscar, and Fr. Rudy. May we also go beyond palliative approaches in helping the poor,” the prelate said.

According to Cala, Romano showed his dislike for capitalists in the Visayas by celebrating Mass for unionists.

Pope Francis: I have come to confirm the faith of believers

(Vatican Radio) Arriving at the “El Alto” airport in La Paz, Pope Francis began his Apostolic Voyage to Bolivia by invoking “peace and prosperity upon all the people of this country.”
In his address at the Welcoming Ceremony, the Holy Father said, “As a guest and a pilgrim, I have come to confirm the faith of those who believe in the Risen Christ, so that, during our pilgrimage on earth, we believers may be witnesses of his love, leaven for a better world and co-operators in the building of a more just and fraternal society.”

Pope Francis said that during his Visit he would “encourage the vocation of Christ’s disciples to share the joy of the Gospel to be salt for the earth and light to the world.”

Keep faith in ‘anti-Christian’ society – priest to faithful

PARAÑAQUE City, July 10, 2015—A Catholic priest has exhorted the faithful to remain steadfast in their faith in the Lord, and to continue giving witness to His truth despite a society that is increasingly becoming hostile to the Good News and Christian values.

“Have faith in God. We may rest assured that the Lord will give us the strength which will enable us to do everything according to His command,” Dom Gerardo María D. de Villa, OSB said in a homily he gave on Friday, July 10, at the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew in Parañaque City.

Holy See: Causes of terrorism must be addressed

(Vatican Radio) The United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday held a special panel on the effects of terrorism on the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, told the panel the international community has not always been effective in preventing and curbing terrorism, especially in the Middle East and different parts of Africa.

“While considering the negative effects of terrorism on the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, we should also be clear in our reasoning that these effects will continue, and indeed will become worse, if the causes of terrorism are not clearly and swiftly addressed by the national States concerned and the international community,” said Archbishop Tomasi.

Cardinal Tagle blasts political patronage

MANILA, July 4, 2015— The country’s system of political patronage is among the biggest impediments to good governance, the head of Manila’s Roman Catholic Church said on Friday.

In a conference on “Servant Leadership in Public Service,” Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle did not mince words in attacking opportunistic patronage politicians who exacerbate the country’s problems.

“Bato-bato sa langit, tamaan na tayong lahat…
because socially and culturally and politically our society has not graduated from patronage,” Tagle said.
“And ultimately, patronage politics or the patronage style of leadership is not service,” he said.

Common good

The cardinal was among the speakers of the two-day pastoral conference held at a hotel in Ortigas Center, Quezon City.

He lashed out at politicians who provide the needs of the community, not out of charity, but to make the people beholden to them.

“There is a form of giving that further enslaves the other people,” he said. “They do not contribute to the common good.”
