Politics of nonviolence

“VIOLENCE is not the cure for our broken world.”  Thus speak Pope Francis in message of the 50th World Day of Peace that will be observed on January 1, 2017, but already released this Monday on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Titled “Nonviolence: a Style of Politics for Peace,” this may be the first extensive treatment on nonviolence by a pope, although St. John Paul II tackles this issue in three paragraphs in Centesimus Annus and stressed in passing the fact that momentous change in the lives of people, nations and states had come about “by means of peaceful protest, using only the weapons of truth and justice… by the non-violent commitment of people who, while always refusing to yield to the force of power, succeeded time after time in finding effective ways of bearing witness to the truth.”

Pope Francis: Like Abram, Christians must "hope against hope"

Pope Francis: Like Abram, Christians must "hope against hope"

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis returned to the theme of “Christian Hope” in the catechesis during the weekly General Audience. On Wednesday, he focused his attention on the figure of Abram, who became Abraham, our “father in faith and in hope.”

Listen to Christopher Wells' report:

Saint Paul himself pointed to Abram “to indicate the way of faith and of hope.” Abram’s confidence in God’s promise to give him a son was truly a hope “against every hope”, precisely because of his advanced age, and the sterility of Sara, his wife. But Abram believed, and his faith gave way to a new hope, a hope which, to all appearances was unreasonable. His hope “opens new horizons, making him capable of dreaming what is unimaginable.” Hope, the Holy Father said, allows us “to enter into the darkness of an uncertain future to journey in the light.”

It is a difficult journey, though, he continued. Even Abram had moments of crisis and discouragement. In the Gospel passage, the scene where Abram questions God takes place at night – but, the Pope said, in the heart of Abram there is the darkness of disappointment, of discouragement. Even though he spoke familiarly with God, Abram in these moments felt alone, old and tired, with death on his doorstep.

Cardinal Tagle: Why is there no room for hope for those astray?

MANILA, Dec. 24, 2016— Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila urged the faithful to open their hearts to the less fortunate, and even to those “who have gone astray”.

The cardinal used his Christmas message to lament the growing culture of “hatred and revenge” among Filipinos instead of offering ample room for compassion and forgiveness.

“Why is there no room for hope for those who have gone astray but much space for condemnation by the self-righteous?” Tagle said.

Pope: 'open your hearts to the good news of Christmas'

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Wednesday urged the faithful to open their hearts to the Good News of the Saviour’s birth.

The Pope was addressing the pilgrims gathered in the Vatican Paul VI Hall for the weekly General Audience.

His catechesis on Christian hope focused on these last days of Advent and on how we prepare to receive the message embodied in the nativity.

Reflecting on the fact that a catechesis focusing on Christian hope is more than appropriate during the time of Advent, Pope Francis recalled the words of the prophet Isaiah, “the Lord himself will give you a sign: the young woman, pregnant and about to bear a son, shall name him Emmanuel” and also “a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom.”

Death penalty ‘lazy’ approach— Archbishop Soc

MANILA, Dec. 12, 2016— There is definitely a case for overhauling the criminal justice system instead of reimposing capital punishment, which, said a Catholic archbishop, is a “lazy” solution.
“Cleanse the police ranks! Fix all the courts! Tighten (the security) at the Bilibid and other prisons. Death penalty is a lazy form of penalty instead of helping reform those who made mistakes,” said Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan at a prayer rally in San Carlos City.

The prelate said the death penalty is unworkable while an efficient justice system is capable of controlling crime.

Pope Francis releases message for 2017 World Day of Sick

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis has released his message for the 25th World Day of the Sick to take place on 11 February 2017, the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes.

The Day of the Sick was instituted by Pope St. John Paul II in 1992, who called it “a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s suffering”.

Listen to Devin Watkins’ report:

Pope Francis entitled his message for the 2017 celebration of the World Day of the Sick “Amazement at what God has accomplished: ‘The Almighty has done great things for me…’ (Lk 1:49)”.

He said the commemoration “gives the Church renewed spiritual energy for carrying out ever more fully that fundamental part of her mission which includes serving the poor, the infirm, the suffering, the outcast, and the marginalized.”

Pope at Mass: Be open to the Spirit, Who carries us forward

(Vatican Radio) True doctrine is not a rigid attachment to the Law, which bewitches as ideologies do. Rather, it is the revelation of God, which allows itself to be discovered more and more fully each day by those who are open to the Holy Spirit. That was the message of Pope Francis at the morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta.
Listen to Christopher Wells' report:
The readings of the day speak of the Holy Spirit, the “great gift of the Father,” the power that allows the Church to go forth courageously even to the ends of the earth. The Spirit, Pope Francis said, “is the protagonist of this ‘going forward’ of the Church.” Without the Spirit, the Church would be shut up within itself, fearful.

(Vatican Radio) Lorna and Joseph are members of the neo-catechumenal way. The couple and their eight children have been in Tbilisi for the past 11 years to share the experience of their faith.
Speaking to Vatican Radio, Lorna said she believes – and hopes – Pope Francis’ visit to Georgia will not only bring joy to the small flock of Catholics in the predominantly Orthodox nation and help them to feel they are part of the Universal Church, but it will also give emphasis to the push towards full Christian unity.
