Pope, Curia reflect on superficial religiosity

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis and the Roman Curia are in the middle of their weeklong Spiritual Exercises in Ariccia, outside Rome.

According to L’Osservatore Romano, the retreat master, Carmelite Father Bruno Secondin, has shared reflections with the Curia on the prophet Elias.

In his reflection, Fr Secondin compared the worship of the false idols in Elias’ time with a modern-day religiosity that is interested in the superficial and in measures of faith “according to statistics.” He called the participants to authentic and “audacious” worship.

More ‘others-focused’ prayers, please—Tagle

Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle (CBCPNews)
An official of the local Church hierarchy has raised the alarm on the tendency of many to become too “individualistic” in their prayers, enjoining them to also think about the needs of their fellow faithful, especially this Lenten season.

In an interview over Church-run Radyo Veritas, Manila Archbishop Luís Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle underscored the beauty of praying for others, reminding Catholics the gesture is in keeping with what the Gospel teaches.

“Why be so individualistic in our prayers, nothing to say to God but our own concerns?” he asked While pleading God for help is not wrong in itself, the prelate cautioned against making one’s prayers too self-focused to the exclusion of others.

Pope at Santa Marta: The courage to choose God every time

(Vatican Radio)  Choose God, choose good, not to be a total failure, maybe hailed by the masses, but ultimately nothing more than a worshiper of "trivial, pithy things that pass".

This was Pope Francis reflection Thursday morning during Mass at Casa Santa Marta. The Pope centered his homily on the Bible passage in which God says to Moses, “Today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and doom.  Obey the commandments of the Lord, Your God, which I enjoin on you today, loving him and walking in his ways”.

Messages of Lent, Fatima the same—priest

MANILA, Feb. 21, 2015—A priest known for actively promoting Marian devotion stressed the core message of Our Lady of Fatima is only a repeat of what the Church has always upheld and taught, especially during the Lenten season, reminding the faithful to heed the Blessed Mother’s request for prayer, penance, conversion, and the reparation of sins.

In a Feb. 19 Mass at the Nuestra Señora de Guía Shrine to celebrate the first leg of the Philippine tour of the international pilgrim image of Our Lady of Fatima, Fr. Melvin Castro, chancellor of the Diocese of Tarlac, explained living out both the Lenten and the Fatima messages is as easy as practicing the “First Saturday Devotions” and meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary daily in order not to “offend the Lord who is already very much offended.”

Extraordinary Consistory: reform will strengthen the credibility of the Church

Vatican City, 13 February 2015 (VIS) – The Extraordinary Consistory of the College of Cardinals with Pope Francis did not complete its work this morning as expected. The meeting will continue during the afternoon, with an update on the work of the Commission for the Protection of Minors by its president, Cardinal Sean O'Malley, explained the director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., during a press conference today.

Yesterday, Thursday, the meeting continued in a serene and constructive atmosphere, with interventions by a further 28 cardinals who offered different perspectives on the reform of the Curia, focusing on the relationship between the Curia and the local Churches, and underlining the importance of better serving the Church in the world. They spoke of “decentralisation”, and the theme of “subsidiarity” was recurrent. Further reflection was invited on what can be done better and where: or rather, in which cases it would be more useful for the Roman dicasteries to act, and when instead the involvement of the dioceses or the episcopal conferences would be more useful.

PNoy’s resignation ‘more urgent’—religious leaders

MANILA, Feb. 14, 2015—A group of religious leaders from the Catholic Church and other Christian denominations, has renewed its call for the resignation of President Benigno S. Aquino III, implying that the “Mamasapano massacre” and its aftermath have made it even “more urgent and imperative”.

The National Transformation Council (NTC) comprising religious leaders from Protestant churches and the Catholic Church, stresses its call for President Benigno Aquino III's resignation. (Photo: NTC)
“We, bishops of the Catholic and other Christian churches, have often been asked if there is moral basis to this growing demand. Even long before the unfortunate events, the National Transformation Council (NTC) has strongly articulated that the President step down. Recent developments have made the call even more urgent and imperative,” says NTC in a joint statement issued Feb. 13.

Fresh start

NTC demands the whole government to step down in order for the country to transform through a new and fresh start.

The group’s members further call the Jan. 25 incident the summit of Pnoy’s mishandling of many obligations, which allegedly reveals the “subterfuge of illegal, unconstitutional and immoral foundation” of his regime, adding that their plea for his and his cohorts’ resignation echoes the general feeling of the people.
