Pope Francis: Foster a culture that recognizes the value of life

Pope Francis on Friday meets with members of the Institute Hospitals of the Innocents based in the Italian city of Florence, which is marking its 600th anniversary. In his prepared remarks the Pope stressed that “we need a culture that recognizes the value of life.” 

 

The Hospital of the Innocents was built by Filippo Brunelleschi in the fifteenth century and is located in the historic city of Florence.  It was the first institution of its kind in Europe designed to care for and raise orphaned or abandoned children.

Bishop, green groups hit ‘misleading’ SMC coal ad

Environmental advocates including a Catholic bishop criticized a power company for supposedly “greenwashing” coal plants. 

Bishop Gerardo Alminaza of San Carlos said the attempt was made through a recent newspaper advertisement which he described as “misleading”.

Pope to healthcare workers: treat the sick as people, not as numbers

Pope Francis meets the Italian Catholic Association of Healthcare Workers on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of its foundation.

At the core of the Pope’s discourse to members of the Association was the defense, respect and promotion of life.


He thanked those gathered on Friday for their “irreplaceable service” to people who are most vulnerable or in need of assistance because they are sick, or elderly, or marginalized.

Pope Francis meets with members of The Papal Foundation on Friday, and thanks them for their support and for spreading the Gospel message of hope and mercy.

Pope Francis welcomed their support on Friday, in an address to its members who are on pilgrimage to Rome.

PPCRV to deploy 300,000 volunteers for May 13 polls

A Catholic Church-backed poll watchdog said they are ready for Monday’s polls and for the conduct of a partial and unofficial quick count of election results. 

 The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) opened its command center at the Pope Pius XII Center in Manila on Wednesday, signalling its readiness for the polls.

Pope at Audience on Labour Day prays for the unemployed

Pope Francis marks the Feast Day of St. Joseph, the humble worker, on May 1st, with special prayers for “those who have lost their jobs or are unable to find work”. 

 

Pope Francis described the low employment rates that mark the current situation across the world as a “global tragedy”.

Contractualization exploits workers ‘to highest level’ — Church labor group

The lack of government’s will to end contractualization has allowed workers to be exploited ‘to the maximum level’, an ecumenical church-labor group said. 

The Church People-Workers Solidarity (CWS) said that workers’ rights continue to suffer with the continued practice of labor-only contracting. 

“We have witnessed how contractualization and other forms of flexible work arrangements exploited the workers to the maximum level and extract huge profits from the sweat and blood of the workers,” the CWS said in a statement for Labor Day.
