Church will not be silent amid killings — Archbishop

Archbishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa (Maria Tan/CBCPNews)
BAGAC, Bataan, Jan. 20, 2017–The Church with all its imperfections and weaknesses will continue to teach the Gospel of life, a Catholic archbishop said.

Archbishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa said the Church is imperfect because nobody is yet a perfect copy of Jesus but clergymen have a crucial role to play for their flock.

“Churchmen are not perfect. Nevertheless, they are supposed to proclaim what is right and proper even if they themselves fall short of what they teach,” Arguelles said.

“The fault of some should not be blamed on all,” added the prelate.

The archbishop was responding to President Rodrigo Duterte’s fresh attack on the Catholic hierarchy for criticizing his “war on drugs” which claimed more 6,200 lives in nearly six months.

Peace, security focal points of Pope's speech to Diplomats

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Monday called on people of every religious tradition to join in condemning the misuse of God’s name to justify acts of violence.

Speaking in the Apostolic Palace to the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See during the traditional exchange of New Year’s greetings with the diplomats, Pope Francis said, “[O]ne can never kill in God’s name,” adding that the world is, “dealing with a homicidal madness which misuses God’s name in order to disseminate death, in a play for domination and power.”

Pope Francis also said,  “Fundamentalist terrorism is the fruit of a profound spiritual poverty, and often is linked to significant social poverty.”

“It can only be fully defeated with the joint contribution of religious and political leaders,” he continued.

Wanted: ‘Ecology volunteers’ for Black Nazarene feast

MANILA, Jan. 7, 2017 – The Archdiocese of Manila, through the Ministry on Ecology, is calling for volunteers to help in its “Zero Waste” program during the celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene.
“We need to instill among the devotees the awareness that caring and concern for God’s creation are integral to their devotion to ‘Nuestro Padre Nazareno’,” said Archdiocesan ecology program coordinator Lou Valencia Arsenio.

“One concrete objective is to set up a waste management system whereby at least 75% of trash in the Luneta and Quiapo grounds are properly collected, segregated, and processed with the assistance of volunteers and the employment – to help in their livelihood – of at least 100 jobless and homeless from the Luneta and Santa Cruz areas,” she added.

Pope: 'Fostering vocations requires passion and gratitude'

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis met on Thursday with participants in a Conference organized by the national Office for Pastoral Care for Vocations of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
The theme of the conference is “Arise, go forth, and fear not.

Vocations and sanctity: I am on a mission.

Listen to Devin Watkins’ report:

During the encounter, Pope Francis set aside his prepared remarks and spoke off-the-cuff to the 800 seminarians and religious men and women present.

Recalling the conference’s theme, the Holy Father asked himself aloud, “How many young people, boys and girls, today hear in their heart that ‘Arise’, and how many – priests, consecrated men and women – close the door? And they wind up frustrated.”
