Church and gov’t should collaborate, not clash— Cardinal Rosales

Collaboration — no other way to go.

Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales, the retired Archbishop of Manila, said the effectiveness of serving the people can only be enriched if the Church and the government work together.

“Church and State leaders must always work together because they are serving the same people,” Rosales said over Manila archdiocese-run Radio Veritas on Thursday.

Pope’s closeness to Egypt’s suffering Christians is crucial during Cairo visit

(Vatican Radio) Father Christopher Clohessy, a professor at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies said it’s crucial that Egypt’s suffering Christian minority feel the pastoral closeness of Pope Francis during his 24 hour visit to Cairo. The priest, who spent years living and working in the Egyptian capital, also said that the Pope’s “tireless” work for good interfaith relations and his meetings with other religious leaders represent another important aspect of the papal visit. He was interviewed by Linda Bordoni.
Listen to the interview with Father Christopher Clohessy:

Speaking ahead of Pope Francis’ departure for Cairo, Father Clohessy outlined what he saw as the key issues shaping the ongoing dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Islamic world and what he hopes this papal visit to Egypt will achieve.

Vatican's message to Buddhists on Vesakh

The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue on Saturday, issued a message on the occasion of the Buddhist feast of Vesakh on the theme ‘Christians and Buddhists: Walking Together on the Path of Nonviolence’.

The Message signed by Council President, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and Council Secretary, Fr Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, MCCJ emphasizes the urgent need to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence as both these values were promoted by Jesus Christ and the Buddha.

The text reiterates how Jesus walked the path of nonviolence to the very end, to the cross and calls his followers  today to embrace his teaching about nonviolence.  Buddha also heralded the same message and encouraged all to overcome the angry by non-anger; overcome the wicked by goodness; overcome the miser by generosity; overcome the liar by truth.

MANILA— Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has challenged the faithful to resist the “culture of death” which, he said, nowadays risk becoming passively accepted.

Speaking in front of the Manila Cathedral after the “Penitential Walk for Life” in Manila on Good Friday, he said that the spate of killings in the country today should “shock and sadden all of us”.

Preacher of Papal Household: Christ's Cross is world's hope

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis presided over the Passion Liturgy in St. Peter’s Basilica on Good Friday.

In keeping with tradition, the Preacher of the Papal Household, Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM. Cap., preached the sermon on the occasion.

This year, the Preacher’s remarks focused entirely on the Cross of Christ: the only hope of the world.
Listen to our report:

“The Cross,” said Fr. Cantalamessa, “does not ‘stand’ against the world but for the world: to give meaning to all the suffering that has been, that is, and that will be in human history.”

Bishops voice strong commitment for Church-gov’t ties

MANILACatholic bishops held talks with top government officials during which they expressed strong commitment to develop positive relations despite differences over the Duterte administration’s war on drugs. The initial meeting was held at the CBCP headquarters in Manila on March 31 in what could be a major step by the two parties to iron out differences.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas, CBCP President, stressed on ANC’s Beyond Politics with Lynda Jumilla on March 4 that dialogue is the best way forward.
“There are issues where we differ in principle, but we should not allow such differences to prevent us from cooperating such as working for the poor and empowering Mindanao,” Villegas said.

“We should support him on peace-making, alleviating the situation of the poor and everything that is for the benefit of the people,” he said.

Pope Francis: Reflect on the faithfulness of God

Pope Francis: Reflect on the faithfulness of God

(Vatican Radio) God is always faithful to His Covenant: He kept faith with Abraham and He is faithful to the salvation promised in His Son. That was the message of Pope Francis during the morning Mass on Thursday at the Casa Santa Marta. The Pope called on those present to pause during the day to reflect on their own life story, in order to discover the beauty of the love of God, even in the midst of difficulties, which afflict everyone in this life.

Listen to Christopher Wells' report:

Pope Francis’ homily revolved around the figure of Abraham, who is at the centre of the day’s liturgy. The first Reading narrates the story of the Covenant God made with Abraham; while in the Gospel, both Jesus and the Pharisees refer to “Father” Abraham, because he is the father of “this people that today is the Church.” Abraham trusted and obeyed when he was called to go to a new land that he would receive as an inheritance.
