Priest stresses teaching of Catechism in parish

QUEZON City, Feb. 21, 2014—Seeing the need to educate the laity on the doctrines of the faith, a priest in a parish in the Diocese of Novaliches is giving priority to the teaching of catechism.

Fr. Joel Saballa, a missionary from the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Conception (CFIC), regretted that many Filipino Catholics know very little—if not completely ignorant—of even the basic tenets of the Roman Catholic Church.
In an interview with the CBCP News, Saballa, who had been raised in a Protestant environment, observed that Catholics are lagging behind members of other Christian denominations in regard to religious literacy.

(Vatican Radio/VIS) On Friday morning, 150 cardinals participated in the extraordinary consistory on the family, said Fr. Lombardi S.J., director of the Holy See Press Office, during a news briefing.
He also communicated that the cardinals had expressed their warmest wishes to Cardinal Silvano Piovanelli, who celebrated his 90th birthday on Friday. At 7 a.m. they concelebrated Holy Mass with the Pope in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae.

Pope Mass: Faith in the word of God leads to salvation

(Vatican Radio) Believers can lose their faith because of passion and vanity, while a pagan can become a believer through his or her humility. Those were the Pope’s comments during his Homily at morning Mass Thursday at the Casa Santa Marta.
Lydia O’Kane reports.

In his Homily at the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis, referring to Thursday’s readings recalled a courageous woman, a pagan, who asks Jesus to free her daughter from the devil. Jesus , recounted the pope, says to her, “Let the children be fed first. For it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She replies“Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.”

PASAY City, Feb. 6, 2014 – God’s preferred residence is your heart, says Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle.

“[God] wants to dwell among us. He wants to dwell in human beings — in our minds, our hearts, our persons, in our families,” said Cardinal Tagle during a holy mass to celebrate the inauguration of the Marian Movement of Priests (MMP) office at the San Isidro Labrador parish last January 29.

Pope Mass: Proclaim the Gospel with humility

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis during his Homily at Mass on Friday at the Casa Santa Martha said that as Christians we are called to proclaim the Gospel with humility.

Lydia O’Kane reports

Taking his cue from Friday’s Gospel which recounts the tragic death of John the Baptist, the Pope said John was the man God had sent to prepare the way for his son. He, Pope Francis continued, was a man in the court of Herod, filled with corruption and vices who urged everyone to convert.

Year of Consecrated Life set for 2015

2014-01-31 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) The Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, Cardinal João Braz De Aviz held a press conference on Friday to announce the upcoming Year of Consecrated Life.

At the press conference, Cardinal Braz de Aviz told journalists that Pope Francis had announced the Year of Consecrated life in November at a meeting with the Union of Superiors General.

Noting that the Year will take place in the context of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, Cardinal Braz de Aviz said, “We believe that the Council has been a breath of the Spirit not only for the whole Church but, perhaps especially, for the consecrated life. We are also convinced that in these 50 years consecrated life has undertaken a fruitful journey of renewal — not free, certainly, of difficulties and hardships — in the commitment to follow what the Council asked of the consecrated: fidelity to the Lord, to the Church, to their own charism and to the people of today.
