Pope: True authority of Church of Rome is the love of Christ

(Vatican Radio) “The true authority of the Church of Rome is the charity of Christ.” That was the message of Pope Francis to members of the Pontifical Eccesiastical Academy, the “Accademia” – the Roman institution responsible for preparing priests for the diplomatic service of the Holy See.

It is only the charity of Christ that makes the Church of Rome “universal and credible” to human beings and to the world. This, the Pope continued, “is the heart of its truth, which does not build walls of division and exclusion, but makes bridges that build communion and recall the whole human race to unity; this is its secret power, which nourishes its unshakable hope, invincible despite momentary defeats.”

Pope affirms CBCP ‘ecology efforts’ in new encylical

MANILA, June 25, 2015 – It is not something new but Pope Francis’ citation of Filipino bishops in his groundbreaking letter on the environment shows that local efforts on caring for creation are on the “right track”, a church official said.

In his nearly 200-page encyclical entitled Laudato Si’ (Be Praised), the pontiff cited a document of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines on the environment.

“Who turned the wonder world of the seas into underwater cemeteries bereft of color and life?” the Pope quoted a CBCP pastoral letter on ecology when he talked about the destruction of marine resources.

‘Right direction’

Published in January 1988, the statement entitled “What is happening to our beautiful land?” is the world’s first pastoral letter of Catholic bishops on the environment.

The landmark document was even adopted and published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Encyclical 'Laudato Si': on the Care of our Common Home'

LAUDATO SI’: ON THE CARE OF OUR COMMON HOME

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis’ first encyclical is focused on the idea of ‘integral ecology’, connecting care of the natural world with justice for the poorest and most vulnerable people. Only by radically reshaping our relationships with God, with our neighbours and with the natural world, he says, can we hope to tackle the threats facing our planet today. Science, he insists, is the best tool by which we can listen to the cry of the earth, while dialogue and education are the two keys that can “help us to escape the spiral of self-destruction which currently engulfs us”.

At the heart of the Pope’s reflections is the question: “What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?”. The answers he suggests call for profound changes to political, economic, cultural and social systems, as well as to our individual lifestyles.

Tagle wants even non-Christians to study new encyclical

MANILA, June 19, 2015 –- In a tone of inclusiveness reflective of Pope Francis’ papacy, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle rallied all, Christians and non-Christians alike to read and think about Pope Francis newest encylical “Laudato Si, mi Signore (Praise be to you, my Lord)”, on the environment.

“We call on non-Christians, families, educators, politicians, business people, experts in science and digital technology, media, consumer groups, non-government and peoples´ organizations to study the encyclical and its proposals,” said the prelate in a statement released on June 18 after the Holy Father read the papal document to the public for the first time, from Rome.

Address of the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva - One-third of the population without medicine

Address of the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva - One-third of the population without medicine

Mr. President,

I join previous speakers to congratulate you on your election. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about one-third of the population lacks regular access to essential medicines and vaccines. It believes that 10 million lives could be saved annually if such resources were more readily available.

The Least Developed Countries (LDCs), as the poorest and weakest segment of the international community, are most vulnerable. The classification of LDCs is contingent on a number of key human development indicators, including levels of poverty, literacy and infant mortality. At the beginning of the Millennium, the Least Developed Countries enjoyed the strongest and longest growth rates since the 1970s, benefiting from sustained global growth, surging commodity prices and buoyant capital flows. Between 2000 and 2008, the average annual growth of this Group’s real gross domestic product (GDP) exceeded 7 per cent, raising hopes that some LDCs may be able to graduate from this category within the present decade. However, with the global financial crisis in 2008 and the drastic change in external conditions, LDCs have experienced a slowdown of economic activity. As a result, their economic growth has been much weaker during the past five years. It has been well below the target rate of 7 per cent annual growth established in the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) which is considered necessary for attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Priest: Life’s a mess without God

TACLOBAN City, June 13, 2015 – Time management and self-improvement aside, the most essential thing in life is the presence of God, says a priest during a homily on the recent Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

“God comes first because if not our life will be in a mess,” said Fr. Gil Manaog, parish priest of Sacred Heart parish, at a Mass held at the public Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival Park.

“It is Jesus’ heart pierced with the lance where blood and water poured out is the most part of Christ’s body,” says Sacred Heart Parish pastor Fr.Gil Manaog. (Photo: Eileen Ballesteros)
The priest also preached that Christ by his sacred heart teaches the faithful about three vital lessons in life: the measure of man’s worth, heroism, and perseverance.

Hearts for love

“Every person’s worth is measured by the kind of love he has in his heart,” Manaog said, adding that the “heart is programmed to love.” This love, however, should be centered on God.

“If there is any part of the crucified Christ which is most important, it is the heart of Jesus pierced with the lance where blood and water poured out,” he added.

Pontifical Missionary Societies: opening up to geographic and human boundaries

Pontifical Missionary Societies: opening up to geographic and human boundaries

Vatican City, 5 June 2015 (VIS) – Missionary activity is the paradigm of all the work of the Church, said Pope Francis to the participants in the general assembly of the Pontifical Missionary Societies (PMS), and reiterated that the announcement of the Gospel is “the first and constant concern of the Church, her essential task, her greatest challenge, and the source of her renewal. … Without the restlessness and anxiety of evangelisation it is not possible to develop a credible and effective pastoral ministry uniting proclamation and human promotion”.

Therefore, the members of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples and the national directors of the PMS have the difficult task of opening up to “the broad and universal horizons of humanity, its geographical and above all human boundaries”, accompanying the life of the young Churches throughout the world and encouraging the People of God to fully live the universal mission. “You know the wonders that the Holy Spirit works for humanity through these Churches, often with scarce resources and even through the difficulties and persecutions they suffer for their faith and their witness to the Word of God and in defence of humanity. In those human peripheries the Church is required to go into the streets, towards the many brothers and sisters of ours who live without the strength, light and consolation of Jesus Christ, without a community of faith to welcome them, without horizons of meaning and of life”.
