Lay people’s participation fundamental to BECs mission

PARAÑAQUE CITY– Formation, conferences and assemblies are on-going throughout the nation to equip the lay community in the call to mission for 2017’s Year of the Parish: Communion of Communities.

In an interview with Fr. Amado Picardal, Executive Secretary of the Committee on Basic Ecclesial Communities of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, active participation to the mission was emphasized.

“We have to depend on the lay people. When you ask who are involved in this duty: it’s the lay people as community,” he stressed.

“That’s the theme’s emphasis: Communion, oneness and participation in mission. And ultimately it’s going to be the lay people who will help in this, remember we only have few priests; there are only 9,000 of us,” the CBCP-BEC executive secretary noted.

Pope: 'a culture of mercy renews hearts and opens up to a new reality'

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has sent a message of encouragement and thanks to members of the International Association for Charity (AIC) as it celebrates the 400th anniversary of the foundation of the first Confraternity of Charity by Saint Vincent de Paul in Châtillon, France.

This very first group has grown into today’s AIC, an international network for fighting against poverty, which now has over 150,000 volunteers in 53 countries.
In his message the Pope notes that true promotion of human dignity cannot take place without the proclamation of the Gospel.

“It is with joy, he writes, that I am spiritually united to you to celebrate this anniversary and I hope that your beautiful work continues its mission of bringing an authentic testimony of God's mercy to the poorest”.

Bishops ‘grieve’ House approval of kill bill

MANILA– The Catholic bishops are ‘grieving’ over the approval by an overwhelming vote at the House of Representatives of a measure to revive the capital punishment.

Lawmakers voted 217-54 to resurrect the death penalty bill, which seeks to reimpose capital punishment for heinous drug-related crimes.
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines president, lamented that the lower House “has given its consent for the State to kill”.

“We, your bishops, are overcome with grief but we are not defeated nor shall we be silenced,” Villegas said.

“In the midst of Lent we prepare to celebrate the triumph of life over death, and while we grieve that the lower House has voted for death, our faith assures us that life will triumph,” he said.

At the same time, the archbishop called on the Filipinos who stand for life to continue the “spirited opposition” to the death penalty.

He made a particular call on the Catholic lawyers, judges and jurists “to allow the gentleness of the Gospel of Life to illumine their reading and application of the law”.

Pope returns to Vatican after Spiritual Exercises, sends donation to Syria

(Vatican Radio) The Holy See Press Office has announced that Pope Francis has returned to the Vatican after having concluded the Spiritual Exercises.

On Friday morning, before leaving Arricia – where the retreat was taking place – the Holy Father celebrated Mass for Syria.

He also sent €100,000 to the poor of Aleppo, thanks to a contribution of the Roman Curia. The donation will be made by the Office of Papal Charities, the Elemosineria Apostolica (Apostolic Almoner).

On Friday evening, Pope Francis is set to travel to the Vicariate of Rome where he will meet with the prefects of the Diocese. The meeting, a normal part of the life of the local Church, will be strictly private.

TACLOBAN City, Feb. 28, 2017 – As the country continues to be polarized by national issues, a local priest deemed it necessary for the laity to be “conscienticized and to be pro-active rather than reactive”, particularly by approaching their lawmakers to let them know their anti-death penalty sentiments.

Pope Francis celebrates Ash Wednesday Mass: Full Text

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis celebrated Holy Mass for Ash Wednesday at the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine hill in Rome.
In his homily, the Holy Father said Lent is a path that "leads to the triumph of mercy over all that would crush us or reduce us to something unworthy of our dignity as God's children."

Click here to see a report on the Pope's Mass.
Please find below the official English translation of the Pope's homily:
“Return to me with all your heart… return to the Lord” (Jl 2:12, 13).  The prophet Joel makes this plea to the people in the Lord’s name.  No one should feel excluded: “Assemble the aged, gather the children, even infants at the breast, the bridegroom… and the bride” (v. 16).  All the faithful people are summoned to come and worship their God, “for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” (v. 13).
