Priest: God’s love prevails over Synod

ROME, Italy, Oct. 25, 2014—A Filipino Catholic priest said the recently concluded Synod of Bishops on the Family event is a triumph of Divine love, calling it a “journey of humans with God at their side”.

“It is in God’s love that people, in spite their shortcomings, find strength,” Fr. Norman Melchor Peña, Jr. of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s Episcopal Commission on Culture (ECC) stated.

While closely following the Synod’s proceedings, hearing and reading from ordained and lay delegates alike the various issues raised from poverty, homosexuality, and common-law marriage, to same-sex relationships, pedophilia, abuse, and others, the priest saw human flaws at their worst.
Peña, however, pointed out that while it has it has its inherent weaknesses and limitations, human culture can compensate for its defects through “love”.
“Moments of despair and pain find reason to hope … We find our way on the journey of human beings with God at our side,” he stressed.

Vatican to UN: To combat extreme poverty we must eradicate inequality

(Vatican Radio) If the international community is serious about eradicating extreme poverty then it cannot rely on “one-size-fits-all solutions”.

Moreover, it’s not just a question of “increasing the amount of money a day a person lives on”. In the long term it's a question of eradicating inequality.

This was the message at the heart of the Holy See’s address to the United Nations in New York on the issues of eradicating extreme poverty.

Delivering the intervention, the Vatican’s Permanent Observer to the UN, Archbishop Bernardito Auza, said “countries should develop evidence-based policies and strategies to combat extreme poverty, rather than relying on pre-conceived one-size-fits-all solutions”
He noted that “the ever-increasing economic inequality excludes and leaves behind large segments of populations, because the affluent become more affluent by gaining most of the development benefits”.

Justice for transgender slay victim, not condemnation

ILIGAN City, Oct. 18, 2014—A Catholic prelate emphasizes the slay of 26-year old transgender Jeffrey Laude allegedly by an merican serviceman calls for immediate justice, not condemnation of his choice of gender.

Talking to Church-run Radyo Veritas recently, Iligan Bishop Elenito R. Galido asserted there is no point in judging the victim based on his sexual orientation, when what is needed is justice.

“Killing a person is crime whether the victim is transgender or not. We do not discriminate. It’s clear enough there is a crime we have to seek justice for,” he explained.

“The mother [of Laude] is correct: We are asking for justice. We do not condemn. We do not judge or anything. We are seeking justice,” added Galido, who chairs the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s Espicopal Comminssion on Culture (ECC).
Laude, a transgender who went by the name Jennifer, was found dead on Saturday, Oct. 11, inside the bathroom of a motel room in Olongapo City, where he was last seen with Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton of the United States Marines.

Initial investigations reveal that Laude was allegedly murdered by Pemberton.
Evidence indicates the suspect had used force, and had intended to kill Laude by drowning him in the toilet bowl.

Card Marx: Pope is seeking input to take Church forward

(Vatican Radio) How to bring together Church doctrine with the pressing pastoral concerns of its leaders. That’s the dilemma that participants at the Synod of Bishops on the Family have been wrestling with over the past two weeks and it was also the focus of the daily press briefing for journalists on Friday.  To share some of the latest developments from behind the doors of the Synod Hall, Fr Lombardi was joined by Cardinal Reinhard Marx, head of the German bishops conference, by Archbishop Georges Pontier, head of the French bishops conference and by Colombian lawyer, Dr Ilva Hoyos Castaneda, one of the lay experts at the Synod....

MANILA, Oct. 10, 2014— A large alliance of Christian churches on Friday condemned the grenade attack on a Protestant church in Southern Philippines that killed at least two people and hurt three others.

The National Council of Churches in the Philippines said it mourns with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) “at the suffering” inflicted by the attack on its church in Pikit, North Cotabato.

Reports said that two motorcycle riding men fired a M203 grenade into the UCCP church while the congregation was gathered in prayer.
