Faithful told to discover ‘meaning of Mary’

NAGA City, Dec. 12, 2014 — With two Marian feasts celebrated recently, a prelate encouraged the faithful to learn more about the Blessed Virgin’s character, calling it something to celebrate.

In his homily, Caceres Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona the shared his reflections on the “meaning of the Virgin Mary in [one's] spiritual life”.

According to him, Mary, mankind’s mother and role model, can be described in 3 F’s: faithful, fruitful and forward-looking.

Pope says Salvationists and Catholics meet at peripheries of society

(Vatican Radio) In a first private audience in the Vatican with a Salvation Army general on Friday, Pope Francis said theological differences do not impede the witness of a shared love of God and neighbour. He also spoke of his first encounter, as a 4-year old, with Salvation Army officers which, he said, stirred in him a sense of ecumenical outreach beyond the teachings of the Catholic Church in that era. Philippa Hitchen reports…

Listen:

Greeting warmly a delegation led by General André Cox, the Pope said Catholics and Salvationists, together with other Christians, recognise that those in need have a special place in God’s heart – so much so, that the Lord himself became poor for our sake. As a result, the Pope said, Catholics and Salvationists often meet at the same peripheries of society.

Jaro prelate calls faithful to ‘help one another’ face ‘Ruby’

JARO, Iloilo, Dec. 6, 2014 — The Archbishop of Jaro is urgently calling on the clergy and the lay faithful in the archdiocese to prayer, as well as to be of assistance to anyone in need, with supertyphoon “Ruby” already in the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

“Help one another. Above all, gather in your in homes or in your churches to PRAY!” the Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo pleaded in a circular to the faithful.

The faithful usually light "perdon" candles at the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral, also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jaro. (Photo: Fr. Mickey Cardenas)
Seconding the appeal of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan, Lagdameo also asked the faithful to “listen and follow the instructions given by the CBCP regarding typhoon ‘Ruby’ (‘Hagupit’), first, to pray and, second, to open the doors of the churches and schools to refugees and to those badly in need of shelter.”

The island of Panay, where the province of Iloilo is located, is included in the “cone of danger” or the probable path where the super typhoon could pass. Pre-emptive evacuation has already been implemented in some Iloilo towns, particularly in those areas badly hit by super-typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

The Archbishop ended his message with an assurance to his people, “God will hear our prayers.”

Pope: Message to Festival of the Family participants

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has sent a Message to the organizers and participants in the Festival of the Family taking place on the shore of Lake Garda in north-central Italy on Friday. “The future of humanity depends upon the family,” writes the Holy Father in his Message, “and it is therefore necessary to allow [the family] to play its role,” in society.

The theme of the gathering is: the ecosystem of life and work.  “It is not enough to reiterate the importance of the family and to affirm its rights,” continues Pope Francis’ Message, “it is necessary to consider how the tasks of the family and of society can be structured in real terms, especially with regard to the relationship between professional life and family life.”

Laity, gov’t authorities urged: Uphold rights of indigenous groups

MANILA, Nov. 28, 2014 — A Catholic episcopal commission has called on the lay faithful to uphold the rights of Indigenous People (IP), urging them to fight existing realities of physical, cultural, structural, and ecological violence that cause the “severe marginalization” of Filipino natives.

“With power of our collective strength and unity, we urgently call on all our fellow Filipinos, specially our esteemed government officials, church leaders, civil society organizations to respect and protect indigenous people’s rights and well being,” the group said in a statement signed by Tabuk Bishop Prudencio Andaya, Jr., Episcopal Commission on Indigenous Peoples-Indigenous Peoples Apostolate (ECIP-IPA-IPs) Chairperson.

Constitutional provisions

According to the group, this can be achieved by “fully implementing the constitutional provisions, the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) other Laws, Issuances and International Instruments that recognize and protect (the indigenous groups’) rights to the letter and spirit of these issuances.”

They highlighted the rights to ancestral domain, self-determination and self-governance, and cultural integrity as the primary means to achieve unity and equality among indigenous groups.

Pope Francis: Interreligious dialogue can help end forms of fundamentalism

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis has urged more interreligious dialogue to help bring peace and end all forms of "fundamentalism, terrorism and irrational fears." His appeal came in a speech to Turkey’s President Erdogan and other top political leaders on the first day of his pastoral visit to the cities of Ankara and Istanbul.  In his discourse, the Pope also stressed the importance of religious freedom, respect for human dignity and said we must never "resign ourselves" to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. He spoke of his concern over the conflicts in Iraq and Syria along with the "grave persecution" of minorities there and praised Turkey’s "generous" response in welcoming a large number of refugees from these regional conflicts.
Please find below an English translation of the full text of Pope Francis’ address to President Erdogan and other Turkish political leaders:

Mr President,

Distinguished Authorities,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to visit your country so rich in natural beauty and history, and filled with vestiges of ancient civilizations.  It is a natural bridge between two continents and diverse cultures.  This land is precious to every Christian for being the birthplace of Saint Paul, who founded various Christian communities here, and for hosting the first seven Councils of the Church.  It is also renowned for the site near Ephesus which a venerable tradition holds to be the “Home of Mary”, the place where the Mother of Jesus lived for some years.  It is now a place of devotion for innumerable pilgrims from all over the world, not only for Christians, but also for Muslims.
