The Popes and the atomic threat: Appealing to world's conscience

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons enters into force on Friday, 22 January. Pope Francis’ words at Hiroshima, which defined even the possession of nuclear weapons as immoral, is the latest act of a long magisterium spanning the twentieth century up to the present day.

Unity is both gift and responsibility, says Church’s ecumenism chief

Catholic bishops’ top ecumenical official has called for more work for unity, saying that ecumenism is not just a gift but a responsibility.

Archbishop Angelito Lampon, chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Ecumenical Affairs, said a concerted effort is needed to achieve unity not only among Christians but all mankind.

Christians invited to join virtually in prayer for 54th Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The 2021 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated from 18 to 25 January. During this period, Christians are invited to pray for reconciliation and unity within the Church.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is traditionally observed annually from 18 – 25 January. However, in the southern hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches find another time during the year to celebrate it, for example around Pentecost which is also a symbolic time for the unity of the Church.

With over 100 years of history, this octave of prayer is a period set aside for Christians around the world to jointly pray for visible Christian unity and move closer towards the fulfillment of Jesus’ Last Supper prayer “that they all may be one.”

It’s what you do than what you say, priests told

It’s what you do than what you say, priests told

Catholics pay more attention to what their pastors do than what they say, a church official said.

Archbishop Marlo Peralta of Nueva Segovia said all priests are called to witness Christ through their lives and the faithful have a right to expect this of their pastors.

While preaching is an important element in evangelism, he said that the “more effective” way to do their ministry “is by believing and practicing what we teach”.
