Pope at General Audience: ‘he who knows Jesus will never despair’

Pope at General Audience: ‘he who knows Jesus will never despair’

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has told the faithful never to despair, as the Lord’s grace is always present to those who put their trust in him.

The Pope’s was speaking to the faithful at the Wednesday General Audience, during which he continued his catechesis on Christian hope.

Listen to the report by Linda Bordoni:

Pope Francis greeted the crowds in St. Peter’s square telling them that this is the last catechesis on the subject of Christian hope, which has accompanied us since the beginning of the liturgical year.

And so, he said: “I will end by talking about heaven, as the goal of our hope”.

Paradise

"Paradise" the Pope said is one of the last words spoken by Jesus on the cross when he addresses the good thief.

Pope Mass: The gift of God's salvation opens the door to all

Pope Mass: The gift of God's salvation opens the door to all

The Lord gives us the memory of  God's salvation which is “a gift” and close to the concreteness of the works of mercy he wants us to do, whether they are "material or spiritual": so we will become people who help to "open the door" to ourselves and others. That was Pope Francis’ prayer at morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta. Recalling the passage from Luke's Gospel in which the Scribes and Pharisees considered themselves righteous, and Jesus makes known to them that God alone is just, the Pope explained why law practitioners had "taken knowledge away" with "the consequence of not being able to enter the Kingdom nor let others enter either".

Listen to our report:

"This leads us to understand the revelation of God, to understand God's heart, to understand God's salvation - the key to knowledge - we can say it is very neglected. One forgets the freedom of salvation; forgetting the closeness of God and forgetting God's mercy. And those who forget the gift of salvation, the closeness of God, and the mercy of God, have taken away the key to knowledge. "

Bishop: Public outrage making Duterte rethink drug war

President Rodrigo Duterte. VINCENT GO

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte might just be rethinking his stance on the administration’s campaign against illegal drugs, more reason to sustain the massive outcry over what many denounce as the extra-judicial killings (EJKs) that accompany the ongoing drug war.

“Even the president is discontented with the performance of the PNP. Don’t they hide it, it’s not bringing about change. That’s why there is a sign of hope that the feedback of the people is taking effect on the president. That’s why the people should continue their protest over the wrong methods … of fighting drugs,” said Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani over Radio Veritas.

Pope urges Oriental Churches to continue courageous witness

Pope urges Oriental Churches to continue courageous witness

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Thursday celebrated Mass in the Basilica of St Mary Major to mark the centenary of the foundation of the Pontifical Oriental Institute and the Congregation for Eastern Churches. In his homily the pope encouraged all Christians of the Oriental Churches to continue with their courageous witness, despite the dramatic persecutions that they suffer.

Listen to Philippa Hitchen's report

Recalling the establishment of the Institute by Benedict XV in 1917, during the First World War, Pope Francis said that today we are living though another “piecemeal” world war. When we see the persecution and worrying exodus of Christians, he said, just like the people of the Old Testament, we cry out “Why?”

Shame for one's sins is God’s grace – Pope ‎

Shame for one's sins is God’s grace – Pope ‎

Vatican Radio)  "No one can say, 'I'm right' or 'I'm not like him or her.' I'm a sinner, I'd say it's almost the first name we all have – sinners.”  Pope Francis focused on man’s sinfulness and the need for remorse in his homily at Mass, Friday morning at the Casa Santa Marta residence in the Vatican.  He was commenting on the first reading from Prophet Baruch who said, ‎"Justice is with the Lord, our God; and we today are flushed with shame.”

All are sinners

"Priests, king, leaders and fathers,” all of us are sinners, the Pope said citing Baruch. “ We are sinners because God has asked to do one thing and we have done the contrary.  He has talked to parents, the family, the catechist, in the church, in the sermons, and he has spoken to us in our hearts.
