Mindanao bishops urge vigilance amid martial law

A Muslim woman joins a protest against the martial law in Mindanao during a rally at Mendiola in Manila on Friday, May 26, 2017. ROY LAGARDE

Catholic bishops in Southern Philippines are not against the martial law in the region but said it must only be “temporary” as they called for public vigilance against abuses.

Speaking for Mindanao bishops, Cardinal Orlando Quevedo of Cotabato said that while they acknowledged the questions against the military rule, the answers to it are “speculative”.

Pope Francis: Jesus journeys with us even in bad times

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has told pilgrims that God walks with us always, “even in the most painful moments” of our lives as he did with the disciples on the road to Emmaus.

Pope Francis continued his series of reflections on Christian hope at his Wednesday General Audience shortly after his meeting with US president Donald Trump. The Pope spoke about the disciples’ meeting with Jesus on the Road to Emmaus, in Luke’s Gospel, as “a journey of hope”.

He told pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square that Christians today are a bit like those two disciples: so often we find ourselves “a step away from happiness” but then experience sadness and disappointment.

Pope: ‘we must ask the Lord for the gifts of love and joy'

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has reminded believers that Jesus' love is infinite and true, unlike worldly passions that seek power and vanity.

The Pope was speaking during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta during which he pointed out that the Christian mission is to give joy and that God’s love is at the core of a true Christian’s life.

Listen to the report by Linda Bordoni:

"As the Father loves me, so I also love you" said Pope Francis quoting from the Gospel reading of the day to highlight the fact that the Lord’s love is infinite.

He said the Lord asks us to stay close to Him and to observe His Commandments: “the Ten Commandments of course are the foundation, but we are also called to follow all the things that Jesus has taught us, the commandments of daily life that represent a Christian lifestyle.

Pope Francis in Fatima: greetings at chapel of apparitions

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis greeted pilgrims on Friday evening in Fatima, as they gathered with him for a brief moment of prayerful recollection before the great vigil that would begin with the recitation of the Rosary led by the Holy Father himself.

Below, please find the full text of the Holy Father's prepared remarks, in their official English translation.
*******************************
Greeting of His Holiness Pope Francis Vigil at the Chapel of the Apparitions 12 May 2017

Dear Pilgrims to Mary and with Mary!

Thank you for your welcome and for joining me on this pilgrimage of hope and peace.  Even now, I want to assure all of you who are united with me, here or elsewhere, that you have a special place in my heart.  I feel that Jesus has entrusted you to me (cf. Jn 21:15-17), and I embrace all of you and commend you to Jesus, “especially those most in need” – as Our Lady taught us to pray (Apparition of July, 1917).  May she, the loving and solicitous Mother of the needy, obtain for them the Lord’s blessing!  On each of the destitute and outcast robbed of the present, on each of the excluded and abandoned denied a future, on each of the orphans and victims of injustice refused a past, may there descend the blessing of God, incarnate in Jesus Christ.  “The Lord bless you and keep you.  The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you.  The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace” (Num 6:24-26).

Bishop’s reminder: Church isn’t the building but the people

CALOOCAN City – In a homily at the San Roque Cathedral in this city, Caloocan Bishop Pablo David reminded the faithful that although the existence of parishes, chapels, and sanctuaries play a big role in community-building, the people of God play the bigger part.

“The Church isn’t the building, the Church is about the devotees,” said the prelate.

“Even if I do not see lots or structures, whenever I see the people of God active and animated, I declare it as a Church,” he stressed.

Addressing the BECs in his diocese, David appealed for help in building communities and establishing new parishes to address the needs and demands of the people.

The Lord softens those with hard hearts says Pope

The Lord softens those with hard hearts says Pope

(Vatican Radio) “The Lord softens those with hard hearts, those who condemn all who are outside the law.” This was the message of Pope Francis homily, during tuesday’s Mass in the Vatican’s Santa Marta residence.  He said that those who are hard hearted do not know the tenderness of God and his ability to remove hearts of stone and replace them with hearts of flesh.

Beginning with the first reading, in which St Stephen was stoned to death by the temple authorities in Jerusalem, the Pope reflected on the witness of Christian obedience. He said that those who stoned Stephen to death did not understand the word of God. Stephen had called them “circumcised of heart,” which was the equivalent of calling someone a pagan.

According the Pope, there are different ways of not understanding the word of God. For example, when Jesus had met the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, he had called them “fools.” This was not an expression of praise, but it was also not a strong word either, unlike Stephen’s expression.
