Myanmar Church touched by solidarity of Philippine Catholics

The Philippine bishops dedicated July 19 as a “Day of Solidarity with Myanmar”. On that day, they asked churches across the nation to toll their bells at noon and at 6:00 pm, and recite a prayer they composed especially for the suffering country.

The Catholic Church of Myanmar has been deeply moved by the solidarity and closeness that the Catholics of the Philippines have shown for the people of Myanmar who are reeling under an intractable political crisis, exacerbated by a devastating surge in Covid-19 infections.

Pope Francis issues restrictions on extraordinary form Masses in new motu proprio

VATICAN— Pope Francis issued a motu proprio on Friday restricting Masses celebrated in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.

In the motu proprio, issued July 16, the pope made sweeping changes to his predecessor Benedict XVI’s 2007 apostolic letter Summorum Pontificum, which acknowledged the right of all priests to say Mass using the Roman Missal of 1962.

New norms regarding use of 1962 Roman Missal: Bishops given greater responsibility

Pope Francis publishes a motu proprio on Friday to redefine the use of the pre-Vatican missal granting the decision to allow its use the local bishops. Groups attending the pre-Vatican liturgy must not deny the validity of the liturgical reform dictated by the Second Vatican Council and the magisterium of the Supreme Pontiffs.

After consulting the bishops throughout the world, Pope Francis has decided to modify the norms regulating the use of the 1962 missal granted 14 years ago by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, as the “extraordinary form of the Roman Rite”. The Pope has published the Motu proprio Traditionis custodes, dated 16 July 2021, regarding the use of the Roman liturgy prior to 1970. It is accompanied by a letter in which he explains the reasons behind his decision. Here are the main points.

Pope Francis to lead Sunday Angelus from hospital after intestinal surgery

VATICAN— Pope Francis will lead the Angelus from his hospital room on Sunday as he recovers from intestinal surgery, the Vatican said.

The pope is at Rome’s Gemelli University Hospital this week after undergoing a July 4 operation to remove part of his colon.

His hospital room is on the 10th floor of the sprawling polyclinic in a wing reserved for papal medical emergencies. The pope’s medical suite can be identified from the street by its five large windows covered by white blinds.

Following his July 4 surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, Pope Francis on Thursday resumed work and celebrated Mass with those who assist him.

Pope Francis “spent a quiet day”, Thursday, with “normal clinical progress”. “He continued to eat regularly and continued his scheduled treatment,” Matteo Bruni, the director of the Holy See Press Office, said in a brief statement on Friday.

VATICAN— In the largest Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica since the start of the pandemic, Pope Francis celebrated the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul with a message that true freedom is found in Christ.

Speaking from the altar located above the relics of St. Peter, the pope proclaimed that Sts. Peter and Paul were “two great Apostles of the Gospel and two pillars of the Church.”
