(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday sent a video message (http://t.co/Oni0OdY0Zk) in English to participants at the conclusion of a conference in the Philippines organized by the archdiocese of Manila. The three day Philippine Conference on the New Evangelization has been focused on three main goals: creating an experience of God in the context of the new millennium, strengthening bonds of communion in the Philippine church, and inspiring the faithful to live by the spirit of mission.

Church joins Pope Francis in entrusting the world to Mary

MANILA, Oct. 12, 2013—The Philippine Catholic Church joins Pope Francis in solidarity as he entrusts the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the Feast of the Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, October 13.
In a letter to the Holy Father, Archbishop Jose Palma, CBCP president, expressed the joy of receiving the news of the pope’s intention to “entrust the whole world to Our Lady of Fatima which is an Act of Filial Entrustment to the maternal care and protection of our Lady of Fatima, Queen of Peace.”

He recalled with the Holy Father the Philippines’ own National Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary last June 8 and said, “we thank you again for your message to us and your Apostolic Blessing on that occasion.”

Members of the CBCP Ad Hoc Committee of the National Consecration are currently in Rome to take part in the celebration and represent the Philippine Church: Bishop Guillermo Afable of Digos diocese, Fr. Yulito Ignacio, Ms. Victoria Borres of Marian Solidarity, Ambassador Merceditas Tuazon, Ms. Carmela Borres and Mrs. Josie Bantug.
The group gave to the Pope the original icon of “Puso ni Maria, Ina ng Bayang Sumisinta” during the General Audience on October 9 at St. Peter’s Square.

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis will consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on October 13th as part of Marian Day celebrations that will involve the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

The statue is normally kept in the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal but will be in Rome this weekend for the consecration which is one of the highlights of the ongoing Year of Faith.

Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three shepherd children in the village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917. She warned of violent trials in the twentieth century if the world did not make reparation for sins. She urged prayer and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. John Preiss is President of the Fatima Family Apostolate in Alabama, U.S. and he spoke to Susy Hodges about the significance of this weekend’s events and the veneration of Our Lady of Fatima.

MANILA, Oct. 3, 2013— No other than Pope Francis will address Filipinos in a Manila-based conference, signaling a push for the local church to discover new approaches on ‘new evangelization’.

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said the pope “will be seen” to deliver his message at the closing Mass of the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE) on October 18.
Tagle said he will get confirmation this week if the pontiff will deliver his message via live stream direct from the Vatican or recorded.
“The Holy Father, who will send a message – that’s a sign that they’re really interested,” Tagle said.

The cardinal earlier said the “the eyes of the Vatican are on us” as its officials are looking forward to the conference that will start on Oct. 16 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

Pope in Assisi: Christians must strip themselves of worldliness

(Vatican Radio) Christians and the Church must strip themselves of worldliness, said Pope Francis while addressing some of the poor in the Italian hill town of Assisi early Friday. The Pope offered this message in the same hall in which St. Francis, about 800 years ago, undressed himself and laid his fine clothes at his wealthy father’s feet, renouncing his riches and inheritance in favour of a life of poverty consecrated to God.

The Pope once again put aside his prepared speech and began his impromptu remarks by debunking a notion that had circulated in the press in recent days: that he would imitate St. Francis by divesting the bishops, the cardinals and himself, as well. However, he said, today serves as a good occasion to invite the Church to strip itself of worldliness.
