Jolo prelate on martial law plan: Consult people first

A Catholic prelate asked the authorities to consult the people first before recommending the Sulu province be placed under martial law following Monday’s deadly blasts.

Bishop Charlie Inzon of Jolo said the government must hear the voice of the people before making any major decision.

“It would be better to consult stakeholders, such as the local government, civil society organizations, religious groups, people’s organizations [for any decision] to be successful,” Inzon told Radio Veritas.

Pope Francis: Free Mary from associations with the mafia

In a letter to the Pontifical International Marian Academy, the Pope expresses his appreciation for the institution of a Department of analysis and study of criminal and mafia-related phenomena, “in order to liberate the figure of Our Lady from the influence of criminal organizations.”

Pope Francis is calling for authentic devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary to be freed from “superstructures, powers or conditioning that does not correspond to the Gospel criteria of justice, liberty, honesty, and solidarity.” The exhortation comes in a letter, made public on Thursday, which is addressed to the President of the Pontifical International Marian Academy, Father Stefano Cecchin.

The Lord’s Flock Catholic Charismatic Community’s biggest event of the year goes virtual due to coronavirus spread.

For the first time in its nearly a decade history, the Singles and Youth Faith on Fire (SYFOF) conference will be held online on August 22.

As mass gatherings are restricted to stem the spread of coronavirus, organizers decided to hold the event via zoom platform and Facebook live from 1pm to 4pm.

For many people, accusations of witchcraft and sorcery are echoes of a history long gone. But for others, it is still a very real threat.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has acknowledged that beliefs relating bad things that happen to people considered witches is still a reality in “numerous countries around the world.” As a result, human rights are violated. The OHCHR lists some repercussions suffered by people accused of witchcraft as “beatings, banishment, cutting of body parts, and amputation of limbs, torture and murder.” People particularly at risk are “women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities particularly persons with albinism.”

Bishops launch ‘Ten Hail Mary’s Daily’ campaign

Catholic bishops have called for a collective prayer for “healing” and an end to the coronavirus pandemic.

The bishops particularly asked the faithful to pray “ten Hail Mary’s daily” in Catholic schools and seminaries, parishes and communities.

The nationwide prayer campaign will start on Aug. 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption, and end on Sept. 15, the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Built on a Rock: survey on Living the Faith during Covid-19

The Pontifical Urbaniana University conducts a survey in Africa, Asia and Oceania seeking to “understand how people lived the faith and reacted to the closure of churches.”
