Pope to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday in Rome church

This year, the feast of Divine Mercy, which is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, turns 20. Pope Francis will mark it on Sunday with a Holy Mass at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Sassia, the centre of the devotion to Divine Mercy in Rome.

Some 200 meters from St. Peter’s Square is the Church of the Holy Spirit, the sanctuary and centre of the devotion to Divine Mercy in Rome, where Pope Francis will mark Divine Mercy Sunday, April 19. The Mass that will be streamed and televised live, will have only a handful of faithful because of the coronavirus lockdown in Italy and the Vatican.

Bataan priests offer spiritual assistance to Covid-19 patients

A Catholic diocese in central Luzon is asking authorities to allow priests their sacramental duties amid the enhanced community quarantine.

Bishop Ruperto Santos of Balanga said priests need to do everything to remain close to the faithful.

“We are committed to go to hospitals for sick calls, to do funerals and to bless urns,” Santos said.

Covid-19: Church initiatives around the world at Easter

Important religious feasts such as Easter and Christmas are marked by solemn liturgies that are attended by the faithful in large numbers and are followed by celebrations, greetings and hugs. But none of that this Easter under the Covid-19 lockdown. However, Churches and communities around the world are finding creative ways to express the hope, solidarity and love that Easter stands for.

Military chaplains lead interfaith prayer vs coronavirus

Religious leaders have come together on Wednesday to pray for deliverance from the coronavirus pandemic.

The country’s military chaplains led the televised interfaith prayer service from Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

This was supported by Catholic parish churches across the country that simultaneously rang their bells at 3pm, signalling the start of the prayer.

Pope’s Holy Week message: ‘Creativity of love can overcome isolation’

In a recent blog post Fr. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P., S.T.D, Ph.D., said he sees reason to hope that the drug hydroxychloroquine could be used to treat the coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Austriaco is a professor of biology and theology at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. He is currently on lockdown in the Philippines with his mother during the coronavirus pandemic.
