Laity, gov’t authorities urged: Uphold rights of indigenous groups

MANILA, Nov. 28, 2014 — A Catholic episcopal commission has called on the lay faithful to uphold the rights of Indigenous People (IP), urging them to fight existing realities of physical, cultural, structural, and ecological violence that cause the “severe marginalization” of Filipino natives.

“With power of our collective strength and unity, we urgently call on all our fellow Filipinos, specially our esteemed government officials, church leaders, civil society organizations to respect and protect indigenous people’s rights and well being,” the group said in a statement signed by Tabuk Bishop Prudencio Andaya, Jr., Episcopal Commission on Indigenous Peoples-Indigenous Peoples Apostolate (ECIP-IPA-IPs) Chairperson.

Constitutional provisions

According to the group, this can be achieved by “fully implementing the constitutional provisions, the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) other Laws, Issuances and International Instruments that recognize and protect (the indigenous groups’) rights to the letter and spirit of these issuances.”

They highlighted the rights to ancestral domain, self-determination and self-governance, and cultural integrity as the primary means to achieve unity and equality among indigenous groups.

Pope Francis: Interreligious dialogue can help end forms of fundamentalism

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis has urged more interreligious dialogue to help bring peace and end all forms of "fundamentalism, terrorism and irrational fears." His appeal came in a speech to Turkey’s President Erdogan and other top political leaders on the first day of his pastoral visit to the cities of Ankara and Istanbul.  In his discourse, the Pope also stressed the importance of religious freedom, respect for human dignity and said we must never "resign ourselves" to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. He spoke of his concern over the conflicts in Iraq and Syria along with the "grave persecution" of minorities there and praised Turkey’s "generous" response in welcoming a large number of refugees from these regional conflicts.
Please find below an English translation of the full text of Pope Francis’ address to President Erdogan and other Turkish political leaders:

Mr President,

Distinguished Authorities,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to visit your country so rich in natural beauty and history, and filled with vestiges of ancient civilizations.  It is a natural bridge between two continents and diverse cultures.  This land is precious to every Christian for being the birthplace of Saint Paul, who founded various Christian communities here, and for hosting the first seven Councils of the Church.  It is also renowned for the site near Ephesus which a venerable tradition holds to be the “Home of Mary”, the place where the Mother of Jesus lived for some years.  It is now a place of devotion for innumerable pilgrims from all over the world, not only for Christians, but also for Muslims.

Church agency spending P563 M on ‘Yolanda’ efforts

MANILA, Nov. 7, 2014—The Catholic Church in the Philippines has rolled out as much as €9.7 million, about Php 563 million, in the relief, rehabilitation, and recovery of over two million individuals directly affected by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in November 2013.
The Church’s integrated program for Yolanda recovery, REACH Philippines, not only responds to the physical needs of each survivor, but includes other components like shelter, food security and livelihood, hygiene, community organizing, and ecosystem recovery, among others. (Photo: CBCP - NASSA)
Fr. Edu Gariguez, executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice, and Peace (NASSA), told Church-run Radyo Veritas in a recent interview shared that the amount, mostly donations from 41 various Caritas Internationalis member-organizations in six continents, makes up the total budget of the Church’s humanitarian arm for typhoon Yolanda recovery.

Integrated human development

The funds are being used in implementing the Church’s integrated human development program REACH Philippines (Recovery Assistance to Vulnerable Communities Affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines), particularly in areas severely devastated by the calamity, among which are the 35 parishes comprising the Archdioceses of Iloilo, Capiz, Cebu, and Palo; the Dioceses of Kalibo, Antique, Borongan, and Calbayog; and the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa.
Gariguez said REACH Philippines, not only responds to the physical needs of each survivor, but incorporates a holistic view on recovery by including six components: shelter or housing, food security and livelihood, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), DRR (disaster risk reduction), community organizing, and ecosystem recovery.
