Message for World Communications Day: Communicating the Family

(Vatican Radio) The Vatican has issued Pope Francis’ Message for the 49TH World Day of Social Communications, the only worldwide celebration called for by the Second Vatican Council (Inter mirifica, 1963).  The theme of this year’s message: “Communicating the Family – a Privileged Place of Encounter with the Gift of Love.”

The World Day of Social Communications is celebrated in almost all countries on the Sunday before Pentecost. The announcement comes on the eve of 24 January, the feast of St. Francis de Sales, patron of journalists, and the day on which the message traditionally is released.

This year’s message calls on the faithful to see families as “a resource rather than as  a problem for society” and invites families to be examples of Christ’s love, kindness and fellowship.

Blame economic injustice, not big families – Pope

ROME, Italy, Jan. 22, 2015— Economic injustice — not traditional, large families — is the real cause poverty, Pope Francis said as he clarified his earlier remark on why being Catholic does not mean being “like rabbits.”

“I have heard it said that families with many children and high birth rates are among the causes of poverty. It seems to me a simplistic opinion,” the pontiff said during his weekly general audience in the Paul VI hall at the Vatican on Jan. 21 where he reviewed his recent trip to Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

‘Throwaway culture’

According to the Holy Father, the economic system, which prioritizes profit over the human person is to blame for world poverty and not families that have many children.

Pope improvises prayer at Mass for typhoon Survivors

Pope Francis improvised a special prayer at the end of the Holy Mass celebrated for the survivors of the typhoon Haiyan at Tacloban, Philippines on Saturday. Praying spontaneously in Spanish with an aide translating it simultaneous in English, he filled the hearts of the survivors with gratitude and hope.

Here below is the English translation of the Pope’s prayer:

We have just celebrated the passion, death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus preceded us, he went there before us on the journey. And he accompanies us every time we come together to pray and to celebrate. Thank you Lord you being with us today.
Thank you Lord for sharing in our pain. Thank you Lord for giving us this opportunity. Thank you Lord for your great mercy. Thank you Lord for wishing to be like one of us. Thank you Lord because you are always near to us even in the moments of the cross. Thank you Lord for giving us hope. Lord may hope never be taken away from us. Thank you Lord for in the darkest moments of your life, on the cross, you remembered us and you left us a Mother, your Mother. Thank you Lord for not leaving us as orphans.

Militants laud Pope’s love for poor

MANILA, Jan. 17, 2015—A local militant group has joined the rest of the country in supporting the head of the world’s more than a billion Catholics, praising him for his “compassion for the poor and downtrodden,” especially as detailed in his “Joy of the Gospel” (Evangeli Gaudium).

In an official statement, Renato M. Reyes, Jr., secretary general of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), expresses appreciation for the deep concern Pope Francis has shown to the Filipino people, especially survivors of Yolanda (international name: Haiyan), most of whom have not yet fully recovered over a year after the disaster.

“We value his compassion for the poor and downtrodden peasants, indigenous peoples, women and youth,” he shares.

“We take comfort in his support for human rights and social justice. We welcome the fact that he is striving to establish the Church of the Poor and encouraging the youth to change the status quo,” he adds.

Pope Francis : love leads us to God

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis reminded the faithful that Christian love is to be expressed with concrete acts, and he pointed out that words are not enough.

Speaking during his homily on Thursday morning during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta, the Pope said that God leads the way with love, and that it is through love that we get to know God.
Listen to the report by Linda Bordoni

Reflecting on what he called the “key word” in the liturgy during this time of the year, Pope Francis said Jesus ‘manifests’ himself at the Epiphany, at the Baptism, at the Wedding of Cana, but he asked: “how can we know God?” Francis explained that this truth is explained less by the intellect than by the heart.

WE GET TO KNOW GOD ON THE PATH OF LOVE

Quiapo feast ‘inspired’ by mercy, compassion

MANILA, Jan. 8, 2015—In keeping with the message of the forthcoming apostolic visit of the Holy Father to the Philippines on Jan. 15-19, the Quiapo Fiesta Committee has decided to underscore the importance of “Mercy and Compassion” in the annual religious procession.

This year’s “Traslación,” or ceremonial transfer of the revered Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (Black Nazarene) is themed “Espiritu ng Mahal na Poong Nazareno: Awa at Malasakit ng Abang Simbahan”, inspired by the papal visit. (Photo: Raymond A. Sebastián)
Themed “Espiritu ng Mahal na Poong Nazareno: Awa at Malasakit ng Abang Simbahan,” this year’s “Traslación,” or ceremonial transfer of the revered Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (Black Nazarene), a centuries-old statue depicting the Passion of the Christ, from Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, to its sanctuary inside the St. John the Baptist Parish (Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene) in Quiapo, is expected to draw millions of devotees, as well as tourists from all over the country and abroad, especially as it will take place a week before the papal visit.

Jones, not MacArthur

Meanwhile, in a recent press briefing hosted by the committee, Quiapo Church rector Msgr. José Clemente Ignacio announced that the procession will be rerouted like last year to the nearby Jones Bridge, given MacArthur Bridge’s “poor structural integrity”.
