Conference to discuss social media, New Evangelization

MANILA, July 26, 2013— A conference is targeting the youth to advance the “new evangelization” with social media.
Now on its 5th year, the John Paul II Ongoing Formation on Communication for Educators, Youth Animators and Catechists is focused on social media to continue its mission for evangelization.

Organized by the Salesian Philippine South Province, through its Center for Lay Adults and Youth and Social Communications Office, it will be held at the Don Bosco Formation Center, Lawaan, Talisay City in Cebu on Oct. 22 to 24, 2013.

This year’s main theological-pastoral theme is “Social Networks: Portals of Truth and Faith; New Spaces for Evangelization. Looking forward to our 5th Centenary of Christianization.”

Organizers said this comes from the message of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI for the 47th Word Day Communications on Jan. 24, 2013 and the CBCP’s Pastoral Exhortation on the Era of the New Evangelization.

MAGE, Brazil, July 20, 2013—The universal, magnetic experience of God appeared to cross language and culture boundaries when a spontaneous worship led by ECY Philippines delegates on morning of July 18 amazed other international pilgrims staying in the same pre-World Youth Day host community.

“‘Yung worship kanina was really overwhelming. The Lord is really speaking, the Lord is really talking to us. ‘Yung mga taga-Venezuela, taga-Panama, taga-Brazil, umiiyak at thankful sila, sinasabi nila, ‘In Brazil, we don’t have anything like this.’” Jose Villa, who led the worship, said in an interview.

During their commissioning mass on July 8 at the RCAM Chapel, the Cardinal reminded the young delegates that they have to go to the event with this in mind, “God is with youth, as he walks, you walk.”

The cardinal stressed that the journey to World Youth Day is not just a physical journey or a geographical journey, but an internal journey.

“Walking with God, with Jesus towards life and spirit, these will help you to really have a fruitful missionary experience. Show other youth delegates the best of the Filipino Catholics. Show them that we have something to contribute with the worldwide Church, in our simplicity, in our joy, let them experience the presence of God journeying with us, bringing hope,” Tagle added.

Pope Francis grants indulgences for World Youth Day

2013-07-10 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) On Tuesday, the Apostolic Penitentiary – a tribunal of the Roman Curia primarily responsible for issues relating to the forgiveness of sins – issued a decree announcing Indulgences granted for participants at the upcoming World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro.

“The word indulgence is not very familiar to many people today, especially to the younger generation,” says Monsignor John Kennedy, an official at the Congregation of the Faith. “In fact, you might be surprised to know that the Christian meaning of the word indulgence really comes from Latin ‘indulgentia’ and it means kindness or tenderness, and refers, in this context to God’s kindness in forgiving the effects of sins.”

Msgr. Kennedy says indulgences “are linked to a theme that Pope Francis has spoken very frequently about since the moment of his election – that is to say, to the gift of God’s mercy.”

MANILA, July 4, 2013—A Catholic priest has urged government leaders to bridge the widening gap between rich and poor Filipinos by improving the government’s economic policy and adopting a concrete development program to settle the perennial problem of poverty in the country.

Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive secretary of the National Secretariat for Social Action-Justice and Peace of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP-NASSA), said that setting the government’s priorities to the needs of the less fortunate would address this imbalance and drive poor Filipinos toward financial stability.

“First, we have to scrutinize the program of the government. How are we empowering the poor ones? If actions do not match the promises delivered by the government, genuine change will never be attained,” he said.

The Light of Faith

2013-07-05 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis’ first encyclical entitled "Lumen fidei" or “The Light of Faith” was released Friday at a press conference in the Vatican. The document completes the trilogy of papal teachings on the three theological virtues, begun by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI who issued his encyclicals "Deus Caritas Est" on Charity in 2005 and "Spe Salvi" on Hope in 2007.

Download here the complete enclyclica

This is Philippa Hitchen's report:

Announcing the forthcoming publication of his first encyclical, Pope Francis described it as a work of “four hands”, begun by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who passed on his draft for the new pope to complete. The document certainly continues many of Benedict’s favourite themes, from the complementarity of faith and reason, to the joy of a personal encounter with Christ. Firmly situated in the Year of Faith, it’s also set in the context of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, which re-established the central role of Faith at the heart of all human relationships.

‘Inner peace’ helps pope cope with new responsibilities

MANILA, June 30, 2013— Pope Francis admits that inner peace is helping him cope with the tough job as head of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.

Three months after assuming as Bishop of Rome, the pope said it is the inner peace that consoles him despite the “magnitude of responsibility” that he is facing.

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle shared this story about the pontiff in his homily during the Pope’s Day Mass at the San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila last Friday.
