Be humble like Mary, Manila archbishop says on Immaculate Conception feast 

Cardinal Jose Advincula on Friday celebrated Mass at the Manila Cathedral for the feast of the Immaculate Conception, encouraging Catholics to be like Mary in her humility and closeness to God.

In his homily, the cardinal said that contemplating on Mary can help one realize that the secret to the journey lies within the words “honesty and humility”.

“As we honor Mary, we strive to emulate her total self-donation, her full participation in God’s humility,” Advincula said in his homily.

A packed cathedral bore witness to the celebration, characterized by utmost solemnity.

Dozens of the clergy concelebrated the Mass, among them Archbishop Charles Brown, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines.

Before the liturgy, a long line of people was observed waiting to enter the cathedral, also recognized as the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

To mark the feast, the cathedral also reinstated the custom of allowing the faithful to approach the altar after Mass, enabling them to venerate the image of the Immaculate Conception more closely.

The tradition had been suspended in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nine months prior to the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8, the Church commemorates the Solemnity of her Immaculate Conception.

Pope Sixtus IV approved the feast in 1476, and it was later extended to the universal Church by Pope Clement XI in 1708.

Acknowledging the belief held for centuries by the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, as well as by councils and his predecessors, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854.
