Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to evangelize and change society, a Catholic bishop said.
Speaking at an assembly for Basic Ecclesial Communities, Bishop Roberto Gaa of Novaliches said that BECs are a dynamic force in the Church and in social renewal.
He urged the BEC workers not to belittle their work and contribution to the Church and their communities.
“Don’t underestimate your works in the BECs,” Bishop Gaa said in his homily during Mass for the BEC Big Day Quirino-Tandang Sora District on Sept. 28.
“It’s also good to look at these small communities when brought together, will be a huge and strong (force),” he said.
More than 3,000 BEC workers and parishioners attended the gathering held at the Rockville Subdivision covered court.
The bishop went further by recognizing their efforts for the good of the Church and their communities.
He explained that “no matter how small one’s responsibilities may be” it affects the entirety of the Church.
He cited that when one despairs or loses enthusiasm in the BEC, it affects the other members of one’s community and, eventually, this “fire of hopelessness” will affect many.
“God did not remove problems but He gave us the strength to free ourselves from problems,” Bishop Gaa said.
“We are part of the bearers of the Good News. We are part of the bearers of hope to others, of light to others,” he added.
The prelate then challenged the participants to continue being bearers of hope instead of despair to others.
“It is possible to say that we could be a light to others or even add to the darkness. We should then choose which one will we be or who we will be: light or darkness?” he said.
