‘Everyone is a saint in the making’ – priest

ANTIPOLO City, Nov. 1, 2013—As the Church’s holy men and women are remembered today, a priest reminds the faithful that everyone is a candidate for sainthood.

“Let’s not forget that before [the saints] become holy, they were born ordinary people. In short, all of us are candidates to become saints,” Fr. Jun Meneses said during a mass to celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints this morning at the San Antonio de Padua parish in Antipolo.

‘Ordinary’ holiness

According to him, the faithful need not be intimidated by the seeming impossibility of holiness, but should instead offer up their daily tasks and chores to God – just as the saints did.

The saints, he explained, also ate, laughed, worried about problems and experienced everything that “ordinary” people encounter.

“[The saints] started with ordinary things. There were saints who just cleaned their convents or fed the chickens and pigs in their convents. Because they offered up their daily work to the Lord, they became holy,” Fr. Meneses explained.

The extraordinary things the saints did like miracles and healings started with small offerings, he added.

Say ‘yes’, follow, pray

Ultimately, Fr. Meneses said, there are three things the saints did that any believer can do as well to travel on the “narrow path” to God.

According to him, first of all, the saints responded to the call to holiness.

“We will not be holy if we do not embrace this calling of the Lord,” Fr. Meneses said.
Second, the saints offered themselves to God despite difficulties.

“There is suffering in following God,” he said, but this did not deter the holy doctors, martyrs and virgins of the Church from giving their all to God.

Lastly, Fr. Meneses encouraged his parishioners to have a life of prayer like the saints.
The Solemnity of All Saints is a holy day of obligation and is celebrated by the Church to remember holy men and women who lived extraordinary lives in response to the Gospel. [Nirva'ana Ella Delacruz]
