Bishop to law-enforcers: ‘Respect dignity of life’

MANILA, July 30, 2016 – Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos, head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (CBCP-ECMI) raised the alarm over the spate of alleged drug-related personalities’ killings.

Pope: Cruelty and suffering but Jesus is near

(Vatican Radio) From the window of the Archbishop’s residence on Friday evening, Pope Francis recalled this day as one of pain. “Friday, he said, is the day when we remember the death of Jesus and with the young people we prayed the Way of the Cross: the suffering and death of Jesus for all of us.”

So many people, the Pope noted, “so many people are suffering: the sick; those who are at war; the homeless; the hungry; those who are doubtful in life, who do not feel happiness,”…

In the afternoon, he continued, “I went to the children’s hospital. There too, Jesus suffers in so many sick children: I always ask myself that question, "Why do children suffer?". It's a mystery. There are no answers to these questions ...”

Cardinal Tagle: God can only love, not condemn

MANILA, July 17, 2016— Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila called on the faithful not to be quick in condemning anybody but instead ‘find gifts’ in people often discredited by society.

In his homily during the closing Mass of the 3rd Philippine Conference on New Evangelization on Sunday, he said that there many people who are being treated like worthless and no one cares for them.

Pope Francis to Dominicans: embody mercy in life

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has sent a telegram to the Master General of the Order of Preachers – the Dominicans – who are currently holding the General Chapter of Priors Provincial in the central Italian city of Bologna.

The General Chapter of Priors General is the second of three specific kinds of General Chapters, each being held at three-year intervals for a 9-year cycle that ends with the election of a new Master General. The sequence begins with General Chapter of delegates – called “diffinitors” in Dominican parlance; then the General Chapter of Priors Provincial; and then, the Elective General Chapter.

This General Chapter of Priors Provincial is taking place in the context of the 800^th anniversary of the confirmation of the Order under Pope Honorius III, and in the middle of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Rights advocates want stronger church response to summary executions

MANILA, July 14, 2016— A human rights watchdog called on religious leaders to a stronger stand against vigilantism and extrajudicial killings in the country.

The Citizen Council on Human Rights (CCHR) urged church leaders to be unambiguous in its condemnation of violence amid a surge in the killings of suspected drug users, pushers and other criminals.

Pope reflects on parable of Good Samaritan at Angelus

(Vatican Radio) At the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis reflected on the parable of the Good Samaritan.

This parable, the Pope said, in a simple, yet stimulating way, “indicates a style of life, in which the centre of gravity is not ourselves, but others.” Like the doctor of the law in the day’s Gospel, we might ask ourselves, “Who is my neighbour? Is it my friends, my parents, my fellow countrymen, my co-religionists?”

Jesus does not answer the question directly, but instead tells of the Good Samaritan, a man who did not observe the true religion, but who nonetheless helped the poor, abandoned victim of robbers – in contrast to the priest and the Levite who simply passed him by. This story, the Pope said, completely reverses our perspective. It is not up to us, he said, to try to categorize people, to see if they count as our neighbours. Rather, the decision to be, or not be a neighbour, depends on us. “It depends on me,” Pope Francis said, “it depends on me to be or not be a neighbour to the person I meet who has need of my help, even if he is a stranger, or even hostile.”

Pope affirms 'Fourth World' movement's work to end poverty

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis met on Wednesday with a large group of French pilgrims, including very poor and homeless people supported by the Sappel community. The group of 200 pilgrims from the Lyon region of France is marking the upcoming one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Fr Joseph Wresinski who founded the ATD Fourth World international movement working for the eradication of chronic poverty across the globe.

In his words to the group, the Pope stressed the important witness that this pilgrimage provides of walking together and supporting each other. He told his guests how welcome they were in the Vatican and reminded them that Jesus came to share in their condition of poverty and rejection by the people of his day.

Leni will be an asset to Duterte admin, says priest

Vice President Leni Robredo commits her full support for the Duterte administration in her speech at the Tapatan sa Aristocrat media forum in Manila on July 4, 2016.

MANILA, July 8, 2016— A Catholic priest believes that Vice President Leni Robredo will be an asset to the Duterte administration.

Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive director Caritas Philippines, said that Robredo has an impressive background in public service especially for the poor.

“That is Robredo’s strength that we need for our country,” Gariguez said.

President Rodrigo Duterte yesterday appointed the Robredo chairman of the government’s Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).

Malacañang said Robredo has already accepted the post previously held by former Vice President Jejomar Binay.
