May isang mayaman na nagdaramit ng mamahalin at saganang-sagana sa pagkain araw-araw. At may isa namang pulubing nagngangalang lazaro, tadtad ng sugat, na nakalupasay sa may pintuan ng mayaman. ibig niyang makakain kahit ng mga mumong nahuhulog sa hapag ng mayaman. 18 An official asked him this question, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
19Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
20You know the commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother.’”
21And he replied, “All of these I have observed from my youth.”
22 When Jesus heard this he said to him, “There is still one thing left for you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
23But when he heard this he became quite sad, for he was very rich.
24Jesus looked at him [now sad] and said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!
25For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
26Those who heard this said, “Then who can be saved?” 27And he said, “What is impossible for human beings is possible for God.”
28Then Peter said, “We have given up our possessions and followed you.”
29n He said to them, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God
30who will not receive [back] an overabundant return in this present age and eternal life in the age to come.”

19“There was a rich man* who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day.
20And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
21who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
22When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried,
23and from the netherworld,* where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.
24And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.’
25Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.
26Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’
27He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, 28for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.’
29But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’
30* He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’”k

2Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
3was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.
4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.
5When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.”
6And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
7When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”a
8But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.”b
9* And Jesus said to him, “Today salvationc has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.
10* d For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”

11 But you, man of God, avoid all this. Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.
12 Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13 I charge [you] before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession,
14 to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ
15 that the blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, and whom no human being has seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen.
Right Use of Wealth
17 Tell the rich in the present age not to be proud and not to rely on so uncertain a thing as wealth but rather on God, who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.
18 Tell them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, ready to share, 19thus accumulating as treasure a good foundation for the future, so as to win the life that is true life.
20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid profane babbling and the absurdities of so-called knowledge.
21 By professing it, some people have deviated from the faith.

Vigilant and Faithful Servants
36and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.
37Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.
38And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants.
39 Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
40You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”
42And the Lord replied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute [the] food allowance at the proper time?
43Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.
44Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property.
45But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’* and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk,
46then that servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful.
47That servant who knew his master’s will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely;
48and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.

1 Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said,
3And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’
4For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
5 because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’”
6The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
7Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them?
8I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

2for I know your eagerness, about which I boast of you to the Macedonians, that Achaia* has been ready since last year; and your zeal has stirred up most of them.
3Nonetheless, I sent the brothers* so that our boast about you might not prove empty in this case, so that you might be ready, as I said,
4for fear that if any Macedonians come with me and find you not ready we might be put to shame (to say nothing of you) in this conviction.
5So I thought it necessary to encourage the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for your promised gift, so that in this way it might be ready as a bountiful gift and not as an exaction.
6Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
7Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
8 Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work.
9As it is written:
“He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.”d
10The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness.e
11* You are being enriched in every way for all generosity, which through us produces thanksgiving to God,
12for the administration of this public service is not only supplying the needs of the holy ones but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God.
13Through the evidence of this service, you are glorifying God for your obedient confession of the gospel of Christ and the generosity of your contribution to them and to all others,
14while in prayer on your behalf they long for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.
15Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

8Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,
and reject not your mother’s teaching;

9A graceful diadem will they be for your head;
