Chapter 14

THE THREE ANGELS

6: ⁵ Then I saw another angel flying high overhead, with everlasting good news ⁶ to announce to those who dwell on earth, to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people.
7: He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, for his time has come to sit in judgment. Worship him who made heaven and earth and sea and springs of water."
8: A second angel followed, saying: "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, that made all the nations drink the wine of her licentious passion." ⁷
9: A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice, "Anyone who worships the beast or its image, or accepts its mark on forehead or hand,
10: will also drink the wine of God's fury, ⁸ poured full strength into the cup of his wrath, and will be tormented in burning sulfur before the holy angels and before the Lamb.
11: The smoke of the fire that torments them will rise forever and ever, and there will be no relief day or night for those who worship the beast or its image or accept the mark of its name."
12: Here is what sustains the holy ones who keep God's commandments and their faith in Jesus. ⁹
13: I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on." "Yes," said the Spirit, "let them find rest from their labors, for their works accompany them." ¹⁰

Chapter 12 THE WOMAN AND THE DRAGON

1: ¹ A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman ² clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
2: She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. ³
3: Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, ⁴ with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads were seven diadems.
4: Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth.
5: She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. ⁵ Her child was caught up to God and his throne.
6: The woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by God, that there she might be taken care of for twelve hundred and sixty days. ⁶
7: ⁷ Then war broke out in heaven; Michael ⁸ and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back,
8: but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
9: The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, ⁹ who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.
10: Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser ¹⁰ of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night.
11: They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death.
12: Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them. But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time."
13: When the dragon saw that it had been thrown down to the earth, it pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.
14: But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle, ¹¹ so that she could fly to her place in the desert, where, far from the serpent, she was taken care of for a year, two years, and a half-year.
15: The serpent, ¹² however, spewed a torrent of water out of his mouth after the woman to sweep her away with the current.
16: But the earth helped the woman and opened its mouth and swallowed the flood that the dragon spewed out of its mouth.
17: Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God's commandments and bear witness to Jesus. ¹³ (18) It took its position ¹⁴ on the sand of the sea.

Chapter 2 GENEROSITY OF GODS PLAN

1: ¹ ² You were dead in your transgressions and sins ³
2: in which you once lived following the age of this world, ⁴ following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the disobedient.
3: All of us once lived among them in the desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest.
4: But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us,
5: even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ ⁵ (by grace you have been saved),
6: raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus,
7: that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
8: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God;
9: it is not from works, so no one may boast.
10: For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.

4: Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents ⁵ here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
5: While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, ⁶ then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
6: ⁷ When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid.
7: But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and do not be afraid."
8: And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone.
9: ⁸ As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, "Do not tell the vision ⁹ to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
10: ¹⁰ Then the disciples asked him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"
11: He said in reply, ¹¹ "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;
12: but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands."
13: ¹² Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

James
Chapter 2 FAITH AND WORKS

14: ⁶ What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?
15: If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day,
16: and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well," but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?
17: So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18: Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and I have works." Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
19: You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble.
20: Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless?
21: Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
22: You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works.
23: Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called "the friend of God."
24: See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25: And in the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by a different route?
26: For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

FOLLOW CHRIST SIMPLICITY AND SUFFERINGS

18: ⁹ Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and equitable but also to those who are perverse.
19: For whenever anyone bears the pain of unjust suffering because of consciousness of God, that is a grace.
20: But what credit is there if you are patient when beaten for doing wrong? But if you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God.
21: For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered ¹⁰ for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps.

Chapter 10 WARNING AGAINST OVERCONFIDENCE AND IDOLATRY

1: ¹ I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,
2: and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
3: All ate the same spiritual food,
4: and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, ² and the rock was the Christ.
5: Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert.
6: ³ These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did.
7: And do not become idolaters, as some of them did, as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel."
8: Let us not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell within a single day.
9: Let us not test Christ ⁴ as some of them did, and suffered death by serpents.
10: Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer.
11: These things happened to them as an example, and they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come. ⁵
12: Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall. ⁶
13: No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.
14: ⁷ Therefore, my beloved, avoid idolatry.
