Card VegliĆ²: action is needed to defend minorities in Iraq

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Thursday met with Cardinal Antonio Maria VegliĆ², the President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants, to discuss the plight of those fleeing the Islamist violence in Iraq. The so-called Islamic State controls large areas of both Syria and Iraq, and has been conducting a campaign of terror, especially against religious minorities, including Christians.

Cardinal VegliĆ² told Vatican Radio the Pope said the Church must be in the forefront  in efforts to  defend the weak.

Iraq: Caritas Intl President appeals for end to atrocities

(Vatican Radio) The President of Caritas Internationalis, Cardinal Oscar AndrĆ©s Rodriguez Maradiaga S.D.B. has written a letter to Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako and to the President of Caritas Iraq, Bishop Shlemon Warduni to express his concern for the safety of their communities and for the wellbeing of “all the people of Iraq.”

Alarmed at the “atrocities” being committed by Islamic State militants against minority Christians, Yazidis, Kurds, Shabaks, Madaeans, and others, Cardinal Maradiaga observed with dismay “the massive displacement of 1.2 million people, many of them civilians trying to escape appalling atrocities in the hope of saving their own lives and those of their families.”

Pro-life supports scrap of CCT funds

QUEZON City, August 9, 2014—Pro-life Philippines supports the proposal to exclude the conditional cash transfer (CCT) from the 2015 national budget.

Pro-life Philippines president Eric B. Manalang believes the government’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, popularly known as “Four P’s”, barely improves the quality of lives of poor Filipinos who are supposed to benefit from it.

Quoting a classic adage, he stressed, “Don’t give a man the fish, but teach him how to fish to eat for a lifetime.”

Prolife Philippines president Eric B. Manalang calls on the government to devote more time and resources to long-term livelihood projects and employment opportunities, instead of to the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, which promotes dependency. (Photo: CBCP News)
In its place, Manalang suggested that the government should find ways to create livelihood programs and employment opportunities for the poor.

He explained, “Actually, it [CCT] offends human dignity. What our leaders should consider doing with the money is to make more jobs, not in doling out cash whose objective is consumption but still unsustainable.”

He stressed that the government should closely monitor the auditing of the multi-billion-peso CCT, and keep a list detailing its supposed beneficiaries.

“The money must be audited to know how it was spent given the billions of pesos at stake here,” added Manalang.

Meanwhile, Fr. Edwin Mercado of Pondo ng Pinoy is convinced that the CCT program is bound to fail because it does not involve developmental enterprise and values formation of its recipients.
If there is no forming of values, the priest said, it will only promote a culture of dependency.

Fr Lombardi on Pope Francis' pastoral visit to Korea

(Vatican Radio) At a press conference in the Vatican on Thursday Fr. Federico Lombardi briefed journalists on Pope Francis’ pastoral visit to Korea which will take place from August 13th to 18th. It will be his third foreign journey and it will also mark the third trip of a Pope to the Asian nation.

Philippa Hitchen reports:

Following in the footsteps of John Paul II, who travelled to the Republic of Korea twice in 1984 and 1989, Pope Francis will spend five days there, celebrating Asian World Youth Day with young people from across the continent and beatifying the large group of Korean martyrs who first brought the faith to the country.
