Cardinal Rosales: Accept Christ 100%

PARAÑAQUE City, June 26, 2014—A prelate’s recent sermon centered on the duty of every faithful to accept Jesus in all His mysteries.

Addressing his audience in Filipino, he emphasized, “True Christians must accept the whole Christ, not just the Christ in glory, but also the Christ in His Passion.”

Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales (Photo: CBCP News)
Manila Archbishop Emeritus Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales, who was at the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Baclaran Sunday, June 22, to preside over its Corpus Christi mass, told devotees that they cannot ignore the “suffering, fallen, dead Christ”, and remain Christian.

“You want Christ’s blessings? By all means, receive His dark night of suffering,” he stressed.
According to Rosales, genuine love is acceptance, not discrimination.

He laments that many Christians only want “Christ the King, Jesus on a donkey triumphantly entering Jerusalem amid the crowd’s hosannas”, and the Christ who worked miracles, but shun “Christ in pain, Christ at His weakest, Christ at His most human”.

Pope Francis: Whom do I like to follow?

Pope Francis: Whom do I like to follow?

(Vatican Radio) People follow Jesus because they recognize that He is the Good Shepherd. That was Pope Francis’ message at Mass on Thursday morning at the Casa Santa Marta. He warned against those who reduce the faith to moralism, pursue a political liberation, or seek deals with power.

In his homily, the Holy Father referred to a kind of “casistica” – literally, “casuistry” – which we have translated as “moralistic quibbling,” the closest English equivalent to the Pope’s meaning.

Listen to Christopher Wells' report:

Why do so many people follow Jesus? That was the question Pope Francis asked in his homily, which centred on the people and the teaching of the Lord. The crowds, he said, followed Jesus because “they were astonished by His teaching,” His words “brought wonder to their hearts, the wonder of finding something good, great.” Other people “were speaking, but they did not reach the people.” The Pope mentioned four groups of people that were speaking at the time of Jesus. The first of these was the Pharisees. The Pharisees, he said, were making religion and the worship of God a chain of commandments, turning the Ten Commandments into “more than three hundred,” loading “this weight” on the backs of the people. It was, the Pope said, “a reduction of the faith in the Living God” to a kind of “casuistry” or quibbling. And there were also “contradictions of the cruelest kind of moralistic quibbling”:

New evangelization is all about ‘truth’ – CBCP head

PASAY City, June 11, 2014— New Evangelization is all about truth.

This is how the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Archbishop Socrates Villegas summed up the content and manner of New Evangelization during the 2014 New Evangelization Conference (NEC) Saturday, June 7 held at the SMX Hall, Mall of Asia.

In a written speech delivered on his behalf by Joseph Latorre from the Diocese of Parañaque, Villegas said New Evangelization can be expressed in three ways: Seek the truth, speak the truth, do the truth.

Society founded on truth

The renewal of our country, the prelate stressed, demands all Catholic Filipinos, especially the lay faithful, to return to truthfulness and the fostering of the sense of the common good.
He said that “a society that is not founded on truth cannot stand, because a society not founded on truth is either founded on lies or deceit which can provide no stable basis for human relationships and a stable social order”.
He detailed, “This means that we must seek what is right, speak what is right, and do what is right; and to do so “in love”, that is, in solidarity with and service of others.”

Pope Francis: God prepares us to accomplish our mission

2014-06-13 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) When the Lord wants to entrust a mission to us, “He prepares us” to do it well. And our response should be based on prayer and fidelity. That was the main thrust of Pope Francis’ homily at the Mass celebrated Friday morning at the Casa Santa Marta.

Listen to Christopher Wells' report:
It can happen that one day we are courageous opponents of idolatry in the service of God, and afterwards we become depressed to the point where we want to die because someone, in the course of our mission, has frightened us. It is, and always will be, up to God to balance these two extremes of strength and human frailty, as long as we are faithful to Him. That is what we see in the story of the Prophet Elijah, described in the First Book of Kings. In his homily, Pope Francis took this story as a model of the experience of every person of faith. The day’s famous liturgical passage shows Elijah on Mount Horeb receiving the invitation to come out of the cave in order to see the presence of the Lord. When the Lord passed, there was a strong wind, an earthquake, and a fire, one after another – but the Lord was not present in any of them. Then there was a light breeze… and it was in the breeze, the Pope recalled, that Elijah recognized the passage of the Lord:
