Contemplative bishops for the poor

(Speech delivered by Archbishop Socrates B Villegas on the occasion of the 108th Plenary Assembly of the CBCP)
How may we describe the past six months behind us since we last met as a conference of bishops? I cannot resist quoting Charles Dickens–”It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

We were visited by the strongest typhoon in the world two months ago but the Lord has blessed the Church in Mindanao with its first Cardinal, Cardinal Orly Quevedo, OMI.
Thousands died from the storm surge in Leyte but it also brought us a admirable surge of charity worldwide.

The best of times, the worst of times! Blessed be the name of the Lord!
As you leave this Blessed John XXIII Hall on your left side, we have put up a small chapel for the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for the whole duration of the plenary assembly of the bishops of the Philippines. Religious sisters and seminarians, lay devotees and fellow disciples will kneel before the Lord in silence praying for us bishops. They are praying for us their pastors. The flock is praying for their shepherds. The lambs and sheep are praying for us their pastors.

Healing at the heart of Christian Unity week

2014-01-24 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) On Saturday, January 25th, Pope Francis will preside at ecumenical Vespers in the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls with members of the many different Christian Churches present here in Rome. The celebration marks the closing of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which has been exploring the theme, taken from St Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, “Has Christ been divided?” Throughout the week, clergy and congregations have been preaching and worshipping in different churches, attending conferences and discussions on the ecumenical dialogues and praying for the Holy Spirit’s guidance in the search for healing and unity among all Christ’s followers.

Following a celebration of the Word at Rome’s Centro Pro Unione for ecumenical dialogue and formation, Philippa Hitchen spoke with Rev Mary Styles, an assistant curate at All Saints Anglican parish to find out more about the ministry of healing people and communities ……

Villegas launches new group to focus on social media

Archbishop Villegas sprinkles holy water on the staff and guests during the blessing of the Areopagus office last January 15.

MANILA, Jan. 17, 2014—Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Archbishop Socrates Villegas’ recent launching of a social media group under the CBCP Media Office signals the Church’s growing desire to reach a wider audience through new media platforms.

No more incense and candles

“You know, the CBCP building smells like incense and candles, but the media cannot smell like incense and candles. It should smell like society, it must smell like the city…It should be where the action is,” said Archbishop Villegas during a holy mass to celebrate the official inauguration of Areopagus Social Media for Asia at its new office in Intramuros, Manila last January 15.

Pope Francis: Don't forsake the gift of being God's children

2014-01-17 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) We must not sell out the gift of being God’s children for a distorted sense of normality. These were the words of Pope Francis at Mass on Friday morning in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. As Christians, Pope Francis said, we must actively strive against the normality of our everyday lives to remain faithful to God’s choosing. We must not sell out to the temptation of worldliness, of living as if God didn’t exist.

We often forget the Word of God, Pope Francis continued, we forget what the Lord says, and we listen instead to whatever word is more fashionable, more fun. This temptation, the Pope said, is more dangerous than an outright renouncing of faith, because it is more subtle, and less clear. It is true, he recognised, that Christians must be normal people, but they must also bear in mind the Word of God which says to them ‘you are my people, I have chosen you, I am by your side’.

Pope Epiphany Mass: Follow the light that leads to Christp

2014-01-06 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) Against the majestic surroundings of St Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis celebrated Mass on the feast of the Epiphany. On this the day when the Church remembers the revelation of Jesus to humanity in the face of a child, the Pope began the celebration by kissing a statue of the Baby Jesus which was put pride of place in front of the alter.

At the heart of the Holy Father’s Homily, was the message that we must never be blinded by the forces of darkness but instead be transformed by the light of Christ. The Pope was referring to the journey the Magi made, whose path was illuminated by a star which brings them in search of the great light of the Lord Jesus.

MANILA, Jan. 1, 2014—Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas urged for a greater involvement from lay people even as he called on priests to be more open in sharing church responsibilities with the laity.

“We need to cultivate in our archdiocese a fresh sense of co-responsibility in the Church and to explore all possibilities for priests and laity to work together with mutual respect and fraternal charity,” the Archbishop said in a pastoral letter to the Dagupan faithful on January 1.

Pope Francis: "The strength of the Church does not reside in herself, but is instead concealed in the deep waters of God"

Vatican City, 3 January 2014 (VIS) – This morning, Pope Francis celebrated the Mass of the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in the Church of Jesus, to give thanks for the new Jesuit saint Pierre Favre. Concelebrating with the Holy Father were Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints; Cardinal Agostino Vallini, vicar general of His Holiness for the diocese of Rome; Bishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer, S.J., secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; Bishop Yves Boivineau of Annecy, France, in whose diocese Favre was born, and the vicar general Alain Fournier-Bidoz; the superior general Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., and seven young Jesuit priests.

Canonised by Pope Francis on 17 December, Pierre Favre, was the first companion of St. Ignatius of Loyola – for this reason he is known as “the second Jesuit” – and one of the founders of the Society of Jesus, of which he was also the first priest. The tombs of St. Ignatius and St. Pierre Favre are located in the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus.
