Our Christian faith keeps us strong amid adversity–NASSA exec

MANILA, Dec. 25, 2013—The Filipinos’ strong spirit which is strongly rooted from the Christian faith is what helps us move on even when confronted with adversity in life, NASSA Executive Secretary, Fr. Edu Gariguez said in an interview, when asked for his insight on how will the Yolanda survivors celebrate this yuletide season.

“Everywhere we go, even if there’s a big disaster, Filipinos will tell you  may awa ang Diyos, makakaraos rin tayo [God has mercy on us and we will keep on moving]“.

Gariguez added if there is one very festive atmosphere in the whole country, it is Christmas. It is a reminder that God cares for His people.

“It is the message of faith. God is with us even in the midst of destruction and calamities,” he said.

Christmas Midnight Mass: Jesus is the light who brightens the darkness

2013-12-25 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) “In this night, as the spirit of darkness enfolds the world, there takes place anew the event which always amazes and surprises us: the people who walk see a great light.”

In his homily during Christmas Midnight Mass, Pope Francis reflected on “the mystery of walking and seeing.” Walking, he said, brings to mind the whole of salvation history, beginning with Abraham, our father in faith. “From that time on, our identity as believers has been that of a people making its pilgrim way towards the promised land. This history has always been accompanied by the Lord!” And yet, the Pope said, “on the part of the people there are times of both light and darkness, fidelity and infidelity, obedience, and rebellion; times of being a pilgrim people and times of being a people adrift.”

Make Christmas a celebration of solidarity and communion—Tagle

MANILA, Dec. 21, 2013—With the string of calamities that struck the country, Christmas celebration this year should be a Christmas of solidarity and communion, a high ranking prelate said.

For many it may be hard to contemplate how Christmas would be like for the survivors of the Zamboanga crisis, the earthquake in Bohol and super typhoon Yolanda who have lost loved ones and things that would remind them of Christmas, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle said in a Christmas message.

Pope: silence guards one's relationship with God

2013-12-20 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) Only silence guards the mystery of the journey that a person walks with God, said Pope Francis in his homily at Mass on Friday morning at the Casa Santa Marta. May the Lord, the Pope added, give us “the grace to love the silence”, which needs to be guarded from all publicity.

In the history of salvation, neither in the clamour nor in the blatant, but the shadows and the silence are the places in which God chose to reveal himself to humankind.

The imperceptible reality from which his mystery, from time to time, took visible form, took flesh. The Pope’s reflections were inspired by the Annunciation, which was today’s Gospel reading, in particular the passage in which the angel tells Mary that the power of the Most High would “overshadow” her. The shadow, which has almost the same quality as the cloud, with which God protected the Jews in the desert, the Pope said.

Tagle to faithful: ‘See the world in God’s light’

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (Photo grabbed from Cardinal Tagle's Official Facebook Page)
MANILA, Dec. 12, 2013—With only two weeks left before the world celebrates the birth of Christ, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle called on the Filipino faithful to celebrate the season with joy by repenting from their sins and seeing the world in God’s light.
Noting the importance of careful preparation for the coming of the Lord, Tagle urged the laity to avoid prejudice in their judgments when looking at the lowly and perceive things in accordance to the light radiated by the Divine.

“It is not just tints, shades, and colors that influence the way we see things. Sometimes, we allow different ‘lights’ or influences to determine what we see and what we do not see,” Tagle said in his talk during the Advent Recollection he facilitated on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Maybe there is a need for us to review and change the lights that influence the way we see our neighbors, the way we perceive life and everything that happens in the world,” Tagle added.

CBCP lashes out graft, corruption in PH politics

MANILA, Dec. 4, 2013—Criticizing the country’s politics as the “biggest obstacle to our integral development as a nation,” the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in a pastoral letter on Sunday condemned the rampant graft and corruption in the government as the primary reason behind the perennial problem of poverty hounding the country.

“Recent developments have highlighted the corruption connected with the pork barrel which those in power are loath to give up despite their blatant misuse for political patronage,” the bishops’ collegial body said in its recent pastoral exhortation signed by CBCP President and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

“It is now clear that our people are poor because our leaders have kept them poor by their greed for money and power,” it added.

Despite the significant gains that the country has acquired in the past months, the CBCP said that the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen as the “blatant misuse” of public funds has gravely affected the plight of poor Filipinos.

UNHCR chief after meeting with Pope: Francis is symbol of hope

2013-12-06 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis received in audience in the Vatican Friday the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres. Guterres is currently serving his second five year mandate at the helm of the U.N.’s agency for refugees. As High Commissioner, he heads one of the world's largest humanitarian organizations with more than 7,000 staff working in 126 countries providing protection and assistance to millions of refugees, returnees, internally displaced people and stateless persons. More than 85 per cent of UNHCR staff work in the field, often in difficult and dangerous situations.

Tracey McClure spoke with the former Portuguese Prime Minister following his meeting with Pope Francis. She asked him if the Pope’s concerns about what he sees as the “globalization of indifference,” came up in their conversations. The Pope first used this term last July during a visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa where hundreds of migrants and refugees have perished while trying to reach European shores in search of a better life. (see below for audio of that interview)
