Bishop reminds laity: Seek marks of a true church

MANILA, June 22, 2013—As different churches emerge from various faiths and religions budding in the country, a Catholic bishop reminded the faithful to scrutinize their spiritual belief and assess if it possesses the marks of a true church.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said the laity must seek the qualities of oneness, holiness, catholicism (universal), and apostolicism in their church so they may be assured of receiving the needed spiritual guidance in their day-to-day living.

“The task of establishing a church is not just for any random person. If our beliefs are wrong, it follows that our actions are misguided too. It is a must for us to scrutinize our beliefs so we may discern truth from lie,” he said in the vernacular during his talk at the Katolikong Pinoy recollection held last Saturday at the San Carlos Seminary.

Noting the importance of unity in the church, Pabillo said it is through this quality that diversity among members is settled toward the fulfillment of a mission.

Pope at Mass: How to pray the Our Father

2013-06-20 Vatican Radio
To pray the Our Father we have to have a heart at peace with our brothers. We don't pray "my Father," but "our Father," because "we are not an only child, none of us are”. This was the focus of Pope Francis' homily at Mass Thursday morning in Casa Santa Marta. The Pope emphasized that we believe in a God who is a Father, who is "very close" to us, who is not anonymous, not "a cosmic God."

Prayer is not magic, rather it is entrusting ourselves to the Father’s embrace. Pope Francis centered his homily on the prayer of the "Our Father" taught by Jesus to His disciples, of which the Gospel speaks today. Jesus, he said, immediately gives us a piece of advice in prayer: "In praying, do not babble", do not make "worldly noises, vain noises”. And he warned that "prayer is not a magical thing, there is no magic with prayer." Someone once told me that when he went to a "witch doctor" they said a lot of words to heal him. But that "is pagan." Jesus teaches us, "we should not turn to Him with so many words," because "He knows everything." He adds, the first word is "Father," this "is the key of prayer." "Without saying, without feeling, that word – he warned - you cannot pray":

MANILA, June 13, 2013—Aside from pushing  their advocacy of protecting life and fighting against ‘death bills”,  a prolife party-list solon also vowed to focus on other issues affecting life and family such as economic, unemployment and poverty.
Buhay Representative Lito Atienza stressed the need to view other social concerns as relevant also to what they are advocating for and will do their best to help one way or another in solving the issues.

“We will not choose [only one issue]. We will focus on economics, poverty, unemployment and anti-life issues at the same time,” he said.

Homily Santa Marta

Without humility, without the ability to publicly acknowledge your sins and your own human frailty, you can not attain salvation and proclaim Christ, nor pretend to be his witness.

Pope Francis invited all to reflect on the theme of Christian humility during his homily at Mass Friday morning, 14 June, in the Chapel of the Domus Sancate Marthae. Concelebrating with him among others were Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello, President of the Governorate, and Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy. Also present were officers and employees from the department.

Accompanying Cardinal Bertello were relatives of the late Archbishop Ubaldo Calabresi, who for years was Apostolic Nuncio to Argentina. During the prayers of the faithful, the Holy Father asked for prayers for the bishop to whom he was bound by a deep friendship.
The daily readings from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians (4:7-15) and the Gospel of Matthew (5:27-32) were at the centre of the Pope's meditation, who linked the image of the “beauty of Jesus, the power of Jesus, and the salvation that Jesus brings us”, which the Apostle Paul speaks of, with that of the “earthen vessels” in which the treasure of faith is contained.

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal TagleManila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle
MANILA, June 6, 2013— As Catholics all over the world united in prayer during the Holy Hour on the Feast of Corpus Christi, a church prelate called on the Filipino faithful to be reminded of the Divine covenant and to regard their physical bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit.

In a simultaneous Eucharistic adoration with Pope Francis held at the Paco Church, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle chided the evil acts prevalent in the Philippine society that desecrate the sacredness of the body and blood of Christ.

“This is my body and this is my blood. Those are precious Words of love and covenant. But what is happening in our world today?” he said, questioning the immoral acts that hound the nation.

“This is my body—the body of women being given to be sold as wares, bodies that are used not for covenant, but for desecration. Children abused, kidnapped, and their bodies mangled so that their organs can be sold,” Tagle said.

Pope at Mass: The subtle danger of idolatry

2013-06-06 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) Everyone has "small or not so small" idolatries in their lives, but the road that leads to God is one of exclusive love for Him, as Jesus taught us. This was the focus of Pope Francis’ morning Mass at Casa Santa Marta Friday. Emer McCarthy reports:

As is custom the Pope reflected on the daily readings and the Gospel episode that recounts the scribe who approached Jesus to ask which, in his opinion, "is the first of all the commandments". Pope Francis noted that the scribe’s intentions were probably “far from innocent”, that he gives the impression of wanting to "test" Christ, if not to "make him fall into a trap". The scribe approves of Jesus’ answer – where he quotes from the bible: " Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone!"- and Christ responds with the comment: “You are not far from the kingdom of God". Pope Francis said that, in essence, with that "you are not far" Jesus wanted to say to the scribe: "You know the theory very well," but "you are still some distance from the Kingdom of God", that is, you have to walk to “transform this commandment into reality”, because we “profess God through our way of life":

(Vatican Radio) Below please find a Vatican Radio translation of Pope Francis’ homily for Mass celebrating the Feast of Corpus Christi, Thursday 30 May 2013.

Dear brothers and sisters,
In the Gospel we have just heard, there is an expression of Jesus that always strikes me: “Give you them to eat. (Lk 9:13)” Starting from this sentence, I let myself be guided by three words: discipleship, fellowship and sharing.
