MANILA, Oct. 19, 2013— The head of Manila’s Roman Catholic Church has warned against an attitude of competition in the ministry for it creates conflict in unity.

Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, the archbishop of Manila, said competition between church organizations is divisive and contrary to the faith.

Instead of trying to outdo each other, the archbishop called on church missionaries to submit to and lift one another and work together for Christ.

“Let us do away with one big problem of missionaries being sent… the individualism and by destroying each other. This is not part of the mission,” Tagle said.

“So to the church organizations and movements, let us avoid the competition of egos. It is hard. It destroys the mission,” he said.

Tagle yesterday used his sermon during a Mass to end the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization at the University of Santo Tomas in calling again for unity in the Church.
The cardinal emphasized that the church’s mission would be stronger and effective if its “laborers” will “stay and love one another.”

“We are sent together. We are sent as church. We are sent as companions. And I appeal to you, let us keep this common journey together,” Tagle added.

“If you have companions on the way, the work may be heavy but you know you have someone there who shares with you the same vision, also the same mission,” he said. (Roy Lagarde)
