Conference to discuss social media, New Evangelization

MANILA, July 26, 2013— A conference is targeting the youth to advance the “new evangelization” with social media.
Now on its 5th year, the John Paul II Ongoing Formation on Communication for Educators, Youth Animators and Catechists is focused on social media to continue its mission for evangelization.

Organized by the Salesian Philippine South Province, through its Center for Lay Adults and Youth and Social Communications Office, it will be held at the Don Bosco Formation Center, Lawaan, Talisay City in Cebu on Oct. 22 to 24, 2013.

This year’s main theological-pastoral theme is “Social Networks: Portals of Truth and Faith; New Spaces for Evangelization. Looking forward to our 5th Centenary of Christianization.”

Organizers said this comes from the message of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI for the 47th Word Day Communications on Jan. 24, 2013 and the CBCP’s Pastoral Exhortation on the Era of the New Evangelization.

The aim of the conference is to equip the participants with necessary skills and knowledge for handling modern media.

“This assembly is four youth educators, animators and catechists, to have the opportunity to grow spiritually and professionally,” organizers said.

Among the topics to be discussed in the two-day conference are Analyzing and Creating Online Sources for Youth Ministry, Preventing Digital Addiction among Millennial Youth, Our Need for Silence in the Digital World, and New Vision of Catechesis.

Interested participants may contact the JPII Cebu Secretariat at  (032) 272-1981/273-3095 or email  jp2cebu@yahoo.com. (CBCPNews)

Bishop seeks renewable energy solutions to power crisis

MANILA, July 26, 2013— Government policies pushing renewable-energy use could significantly reduce power crisis in Southern Philippines, a Catholic bishop said.

Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez said Mindanao has several alternative sources of energy that can prevent the region from suffering an electricity crisis.

“Renewable energy sources abound in Mindanao,” Gutierrez said over Manila archdiocese-run Radio Veritas Friday.

The use of renewable energy, he said, is likely to lessen the power crisis and achieve the low cost charges of electric supply.

“The President (Benigno Aquino III) needs two things: seriousness and willingness to serve the common people. Together it will serve the energy crisis in Mindanao,” Gutierrez said. (CBCPNews)
